not serious wine chats

to kick things off in 2019 we’re trading out the bottles and barrels for taps and tinnies and talking all things beer. we started not serious wine chats as a way to breakdown some of the barriers that can make you feel excluded from the wine world, and with craft beer now being the rule rather than the exception at most restaurants and bars it can feel as daunting choosing a beer as it can be to choose a wine.

There's a lot going on in the Australian spirits world that we don't often talk about (maybe we're too busy bagning on about wine...?). But there's a whole bunch of very involved, really great, really smart people that spend A LOT of time talking about Australian spirits, cocktails, and bars. So we're wrangling a few of them to come and share the knowledge (and drinks) with us.

it really feels like there's something big happening in tasmanian wine. increased plantings, increased exports to wider australia, and it just seems like more and more people are making the move to discover what abounds are to be had in our most southern state. we were lucky enough to be able to host a chat as a prelude to bottletops, hobart's biggest wine tasting party, and speak with some of tasmanian wine's best people.

it’s not news that our climate is changing. we want to know what this means for wine! grapes are not easy to grow. they’re fickle and demanding and need a specific and cohesive set of environmental factors to grow well and make delicious wine. so what do we do when increasingly extreme weather events threaten that?

the sommelier - super smart person with a super mysterious job. let's de-mystify it. what exactly is it that they do?

how do wine list gets created, and who for and what limitations are faced in that process. how do you balance good hospitality with that never ending influencer - money? is there a difference for men and women somms? how do you become a sommelier and how do we inspire more people to want to do it?

there are plenty of things that come to mind when you first taste a glass of wine.

you might think 'hey! flavours! berries! baking spice! three-day-old chewed tobacco!'

or you might think 'yeah I can really taste the foothills of the mclaren vale in my cheeks'

or you might think 'the somm said I should taste pencil shavings? wait. what?'

this month, we're looking at how much information in your wine glass is undisputed fact, and how much is learned, or taught to us by others, or influenced by culture or trend or that hot waiter at your favourite wine bar.

do we all get the same thing when we taste the same wine? should we?

can we really taste things like terroir, and should these taste the same to everyone?

are you an emotional taster or a technical taster,

and what the hell do those things even mean?

like most things, wine costs money to make. but what's the deal with pricing wine, and why is it so different depending on where you buy it? does price reflect quality? how much should quality cost, and who decides? where's your money going, and where's the value?
