  • 13- Valentines Day... Why it's OKAY to be single

Okannawa talked about an important topic for many girls in Episode 13, "Why it's OKAY to be single." Whether or not it's from the pattern of not feeling good enough for relationships or feeling like we've been used by boys during talking stages,  being single can open a whole new realm of insecurities, even though it shouldn't. Being single for a while can make it harder to commit and eventually open up to people who may admit their feelings. Despite the stigma against being single, there are plenty of ways to make it positive. Being single shows people you don't lower your standards and can make you super independent. Being single gives you time to learn about yourself and prioritize the relationship with yourself, and also helps you learn what you truly want in a partner.

"Being single helps you buckle down and focus on what's best for you and fully commit to the goals you have for yourself. Once that perfect person comes along, you'll be ready."

  • 12- The Psychology Behind Privilege

Okannawa opened a discussion about mental health awareness in Episode 10 through multiple topics. So many people struggle with mental illness, and it's important to recognize that everyone is going through a silent battle that we know nothing about. Taking the time to rest and care for yourself is a priority when it comes to healing. Acknowledging that people around you may be living with mental illnesses and taking time to consider their inclusion is a step that we all need to take. Although some people fail to understand the hardships of mental health if they don't go through it, educating others and creating open discussions, if comfortable, is important and necessary.

  • 11- Black History Month: How to be ANTI-Racist.
Okannawa went real in Episode 11 talking about Black History month and finally taking charge in shifting our gears into becoming Anti-Racists. In society, people fail to take the first step in becoming anti-racists. We fail to even acknowledge that systemic racism is real, or we try to deny the fact that this issue even exists because it's a fragile topic and we hate the feeling of being vulnerable to it. Yet, this won't get us anywhere.
"Being open to growth, being open to change," as Okannawa says, is the first mind shift we need to take in order to come together and change our ways of facing racism and for YOU to become the next Anti-Racist.

  • 9- The Importance of Emotional Hygiene
It’s time to talk about self-care! Inspired by Guy Winch, Okannawa delves into the importance of prioritizing oneself and some of the ways in which this is attainable with a busy calendar. There are stress-inducing activities all around, from struggling with a demanding work schedule to maintaining good grades, it is difficult to escape the necessary aspects of one’s life. Human nature urges one not to pursue change but by facing burnout and stress head-on a healthy mindset can emerge or improve.
“Self-care is not a reward, it’s a part of the process of us being human beings,” as stated by Okannawa, shows the importance of self-care as a necessary part of living life rather than something that is occasional or unattainable. So grab some chocolate, put on a face mask, and sit back and relax as Okannawa dives into the world of emotional hygiene.

  • 6- WE DON'T NEED B.A.Bs!! Self-worth & Positive Talking
In episode 6, Okannawa spoke about the importance of positive self worth and self confidence. There are so many girls who want to love themselves but struggle with it. Your self confidence reflects onto your relationships not only with yourself but also other people. The way that you feel about yourself will be reflected in the way you treat others. One way to help your confidence is to be aware of your inner voice and try and channel positive self talk.
As Okannawa says, “Whenever things don’t go our way, we have to look about and think deeper about how can this opportunity or challenge benefit me in the long run.” The way we feel about ourselves comes from within and the only person who can change this is you!

  • 5- THANKSGIVING SPECIAL: Leave fake friends in 2020!

Happy Thanksgiving! Celebrate this special episode of Podcast4theGirls as Okannawa talks about the truth behind the holiday and her personal gratitudes and struggles reflecting on 2020. It can be hard maintaining healthy relationships during a non-pandemic year but throw in the difficulties of friends’ true colors and distance from family members and that’s like getting the short piece of the wishbone. Highlights of Episode 5 include Okannawa speaking on ditching fake friends, seasonal depression, and her favorite parts about Turkey Day.

Okannawa shares there are things to be thankful for even through dark times, “This is going to be the first Christmas that my nephew is going to be in which is super exciting, I love him so much.” Just as it is important to ventilate the bad things, Thanksgiving reminds us to look back and find the important things we value in life like devoted friends and Filipino pancit!
