Today on the show Amanda talks with Maddie Kertay. She is an award-winning quilter and the founder and CEO of the BadAss Quilters Society. Maddie believes that dedicated community is far more important than a perfect quarter-inch seam or specific quilting style. A safe, supportive, and welcoming community for politically liberal quilters have been Maddie Kertay’s goal for 10 years and counting. BadAss Quilters Society specifically serves and supports politically liberal quilters with community, content, and commentary on the state of today’s quilting culture. Maddie is a long-time community builder having built her state’s first wholly inclusive and LGBTQIA-affirming homeschooling group to support her family and other progressive families like it when there was no place for her family to gather with others of a like mind at the time. Maddie is the mother to 6 children ranging in ages from 33-22 and grandmother to one, Maddie makes her home in Chattanooga TN in an old house she is restoring with her husband and way too many animals, including a rotating cast on neonatal kittens for which she is a professional foster and advocate for the most medically fragile of them year-round. Maddie is a fierce advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community of which she is a part. When not caring for kittens, slinging a hammer, or out in her garden you can find her writing on her blog to further the evolution of the larger quilting community to become a more welcoming and diverse place. Somewhere in there, she sneaks in time for her passion for art quilting and on occasion sewing some clothing.

Amanda interviewed Ashelyn Downs of Urban Dwell Studio and The Grateful Thread podcast. Ashelyn is a wife, mom of five, pattern designer, podcast host and artist.
From an early age, Ashelyn was always creating. From playing “art school” with cousins and forcing her younger sisters to practice dance routines and plays for hours on end to constructing mini homes from Q-tips and glue, there was always something to transform or beautify. As an adult, her love for textiles flourished as she found herself making her family’s house into a home.
During the pandemic, she began transforming vintage quilts into useable products and a small business was born. Upon working with so many incredible quilts, Ashelyn decided to try her own hand at this artform that was such a large part of her life; so, she made her first quilt in March 2022. Then, she made another. And another... and another.
While she is fairly new to quilting, her sewing experience, pattern writing and design background have culminated into creating beginner friendly quilt patterns that represent the styles and the spaces of the people that get to use them.
Pulling inspiration from the full evolution of 20th century architecture, 90’s grunge, street art, travel and pop culture, she combines minimalist color pallets and artistic concepts to her work, which she hopes will inspire the next generation of quilters so that, when they discover the joy that is quilting, that there is an entire subculture corner of the quilting world with their names on it- waiting, with arms wide open.
