It's the season finale of Council President Mosby's Notes from the Council Chambers Podcast and he's celebrating with a conversation with Terri Lee Freeman. As the president of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

Freeman brings with her a wide wealth of experience. She was the founding executive director of the Freddie Mac Foundation in Washington, DC, served as president of the Greater Washington Community Foundation and, most recently, served as the president of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, is no stranger to broadening the scope and exposure of museums that cater to American history through the African American experience. 

In Episode 13, Council President Mosby talks to President Freeman about discuss her upbringing, the importance of community building, what it is like steering the Reginald F. Lewis Museum post-COVID, and why we must continue to tell our stories despite the movement to erase the contributions of people of color.

Excitement is bubbling over at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra as the city awaits the official debut of Jonathan Heyward. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he began his musical training as a cellist at the age of ten and started conducting while still at school. He studied conducting at the Boston Conservatory of Music, where he became assistant conductor of the prestigious institution’s opera department and of the Boston Opera Collaborative, and received postgraduate lessons from Sian Edwards at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Before leaving the Academy, he was appointed assistant conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, where he was mentored by Sir Mark Elder, and became Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra. His debut with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the 2021 BBC Proms earned five-star reviews and was hailed by British newspaper The Guardian as ‘an unforgettable showcase of high-energy collaboration’.

Last spring, the Baltimore Symphony Music Director Search Committee—comprised of BSO musicians, staff and community members—voted unanimously for Jonathan Heyward to be their music director. He is the first Black person to be installed. On this episode of Notes from the Council Chambers Podcast, I chat with Jonathan Heyward about the origins of his love for music, his experiences and his upcoming tenure as Music Director for the BSO.

Back to school means back to class, back to learning and, for Jared Perry, back to teaching music to students at Booker T. Washington Middle School for the Arts. But this year is totally different for Mr. Perry. Today, Council President Mosby welcomes Jared Perry, Baltimore City Public School’s Teacher of the Year, on Notes from the Council Chambers Podcast to talk about his love for music, the importance of sharing that music with students and what it means for him to be Baltimore City Public School’s Teacher of the Year.

School is back in session and our college students are moving into their campus dorms. Council President Nick J. Mosby had an opportunity to sit down with Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, president of Coppin State University, about the great work at Coppin State University that is sometimes overlooked. Council President wanted to have President Jenkins on the podcast to share the great things happening at Coppin, his goal to have the HBCU on the forefront of the revitalization of West Baltimore and his vision for Coppin's growth.

July is heating up as Council President Mosby has Baltimore's own D. Watkins on Notes from the Council Chambers Podcast. A native of East Baltimore, D. Watkins is one of today’s most prolific writers, intellectuals and leaders. June is National Men’s Health Month, a time when men are encouraged to address their physical and emotional well-being. However, we know that many of us don’t always do what’s necessary to take care of ourselves to prevent disease and illness.

In this episode, Council President Mosby speaks with Dr. Wallace Robert Johnson, a hypertension specialist and internal medicine physician at the University of Maryland Medical center and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, to learn more about the steps men can take to be healthy and whole.

May is Older Americans Month and it was first established 60 years ago by President John F. Kennedy as a way to raise awareness of the challenges older adults face, from inadequate health insurance to questions around sufficient savings for retirement. While those challenges may still exist for far too many of our elders, I think it’s safe to say that older adults today are very different than older adults were six decades ago.

April is Financial Literacy Month and Council President will have LaToya Cooper, Chase Mondawmin Branch Manager and Joel Gamble, Baltimore Community Manager on the podcast to discuss their roles and how we can help Baltimoreans create a sustainable financial future for themselves and their families.
