Spiral: From the Book of Saw landed in theaters today, and along with it, 21 Savage‘s horrorcore soundtrack. Under Epic Records and Slaughter Gang, the concise track list features four songs, each of which riff on the creepy sonics of past Saw movies with heavy hip-hop and rap undertones. Enlisting production assistance from Turbo and Kid Nazel, Savage tapped Young Thug, Gunna, 21 Harold, Real Recognize Rio, SG Tip, Millie Go Lightly and Young Nudy for collaboration on the soundtrack. Ahead of the film’s debut, Savage — known for instilling horror into his own bars and music videos — released the soundtrack’s eponymous single, “Spiral,” which reinterprets the series’ classic theme song. “You Ain’t Hard” and “Down Bad” featuring Millie Go Lightly elevate the movie’s haunting plot with fast-paced tempos and hard-hitting lyrics, while the final track “Emergency” featuring Gunna and Young Thug rounds out the cinematic EP with a slow-building rhythm that intensifies suspense. The horror movie, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, follows a police veteran, played by Samuel L. Jackson, a detective, played by Chris Rock, and a rookie, played by Max Minghella, on an eery investigation of a city’s past murder cases, while the trio attempt to stop a Jigsaw copycat killer.

The Queen is back! Nicki Minaj goes interstellar with a rerelease of her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, which is now available for streaming and features new guests spots from Drake and Lil Wayne. Spanning 23 songs and almost 80 minutes from start to finish, Scotty features three new tracks, “Seeing Green” featuring Drake and Lil Wayne, “Fractions,” and “Crocodile Tears (Remix)” with Skillibeng. Also, the Trinidad-born star goes full-retro for the compilation's revamped Star Trek-themed artwork. Minaj's last studio album was 2018's Queen, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

It's been over 1,000 days without a J. Cole solo project, but now the North Carolina rapper returns with his new album, The Off-Season. On Friday (May 14), Cole unleashed his first solo offering since 2018's KOD album. The Dreamville Records head honcho comes through with 12 songs including the previously released "Interlude." On the production side, Cole taps Timbaland, Boi-1da, DJ Dahi, Jake One and more. The LP has uncredited features from Lil Baby, 21 Savage and Morray on the song "My Life," which finds Morray singing a sample of Pharoahe Monch's rhymes from the 2002 track "The Life" with Styles P. Cole officially announced on May 4 that the LP would be dropping with an announcement shared to Instagram and Twitter. "My new album The Off-Season available 5/14. Just know this was years in the making," he wrote in the caption for his album artwork, which features himself standing next to an inflamed basketball hoop. The fiery court Cole is standing near could be metaphorically linked to the basketball themes the rhymer has used for past projects like The Warm Up, Friday Night Lights and The Sideline Story.

The real is back, the ‘Ville is back as J. Cole unleashes a new single from his upcoming album, The Off-Season, titled “Interlude.” It has been a long time since we last heard from J. Cole over wax. In July of last year, the Carolina Prophet released a two-pack called Lewis Street EP, which included “The Climb Back” and “Lion King on Ice.” Cole said that they were the “first two songs from The Fall Off” and lit the flame of fans worldwide. Now, one week away from the fabled album that Cole teased in an Instagram post months ago, “The Fall Off Era”  is finally about to begin. Cole announced the release of The Off-Season on the 14-year anniversary of his debut mixtape, The Come Up. The cover art for both projects look similar, with Cole standing adjacent to the center of the photo. This time, instead of the city as his backdrop, Cole stands in front of a flaming basketball hoop, possibly symbolizing the “fire that was once dying out” that he mentioned in his Players’ Tribune piece, finally returning. If “Interlude” is any indication of what The Off-Season has to offer, then next week should be scorching hot. Listen to J. Apple is almost certainly going to win the legal battle, but that doesn't mean it's right. A victory in court will protect the profit that flows from the App Store, but it won't change the fact that the company's policies aren't nearly as good for consumers as Apple would like to think. Epic, for its part, likes to say it's in this fight for the benefit of small developers. Really, though, the only thing it wants to change is who collects the commission they pay. And, for users, regardless of which side wins, very little will get better for users. True, if Epic wins, there's a chance users might be able to download apps through alternate app stores, or use alternative methods of payments. That's good for Epic, but I'm not sure it's actually better for users. For example, on Android, which allows "side-loading," almost no one uses that method of downloading apps. It's not actually a better experience. Then again, as this week has made clear, that's not what this fight is about--even if it should be the only thing that matters.

Built For Whatever is Grizzley’s official return since last year’s EP, The Smartest. The album boasts features from artists like fellow Detroit native Big Sean, Lil Durk, Young Dolph, G Herbo, the late King Von, and more. One of the most anticipated rap songs of the year is Trippie Redd's "Miss The Rage," a Playboi Carti-featuring track that took over video platforms like TikTok off the strength of a snippet of the beat. Today, the song has finally dropped. Loesum's instrumental, with its reversed synth chords, offers a brighter and far more swooning atmosphere than most tracks on Carti's recent album Whole Lotta Red. The song also marks a return to hip-hop for Redd after the pop-punk remix of his album Pegasus, produced by blink-182's Travis Barker.
