The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you.   
  
Take a moment and quiet yourself. Take a deep breath. Welcome God’s presence. And say, “Come Holy Spirit.”     
    
Today’s reading is from Psalm 63.   


1 You, God, are my God,  
    earnestly I seek you;  
I thirst for you,  
    my whole being longs for you,  
in a dry and parched land  
    where there is no water.  
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary  
    and beheld your power and your glory.  
3 Because your love is better than life,  
    my lips will glorify you.  
4 I will praise you as long as I live,  
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.  
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;  
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.  
6 On my bed I remember you;  
    I think of you through the watches of the night.  
7 Because you are my help,  
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.  
8 I cling to you;  
    your right hand upholds me.  
9 Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;  
    they will go down to the depths of the earth.  
10 They will be given over to the sword  
    and become food for jackals.  
11 But the king will rejoice in God;  
    all who swear by God will glory in him,  
    while the mouths of liars will be silenced.  
  

David is once again writing this Psalm as he is escaping and running for his life from his rebellious son Absalom. David and his men were in desperate need for food and water as they were crossing the Jordan River. In that very moment of starvation and thirst, David pauses and describes his deepest need as his need for God.  I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.  
    
David’s physical needs reminded him of his spiritual needs. Instead of first seeking for his physical needs to be met, David seeks first for his spiritual needs to be met, trusting that God also cares about his physical needs. As you listen to the Psalm again, consider your own needs, both spiritual and physical. Bring all of your needs to the Lord through David’s prayer.   
    
Jesus declared in the Gospel of John, "whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life… I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."  Will you take his words into your heart today? Will you seek Jesus for every need of your life, even hunger and thirst – trusting that when you come to him that he will meet all of your needs?
