One of the difficulties I experienced as an NP student and new grad NP was promoting efficient conversation with patients😓

Some patients loved talking, and sometimes, I took too long to finish the conversation and ended up pushing the rest of my clinic schedule and having other patients wait too long😱

This is a difficult task because you want your patients to feel heard and cared for, but you must stick to your schedule to make other patients happy.

Having a good work-life balance is crucial to have a fulfilling life☝️

But building a solid nurse practitioner (NP) career itself already comes with a lot of challenges, and it can be difficult to balance with your personal life😣

I learned this in a hard way when I was in a DNP program while working full-time as an NP, and over the year, I finally figured out how to create a work-and-life balance that makes me happy☺️

I currently work at two clinical sites, own and run a business, and play two leadership roles at national and state levels, but still get to go on a vacation at least every 3 months, go surf 2-3 times a week and hang out with my partner and friends regularly🏖️✈️🏄‍♀️

In this episode, I share 7 things that I practice on my own to have an amazing career while doing things to make myself happy✨

This episode is about “MSN vs DNP: Which NP programs to choose?”

If you are thinking of becoming a nurse practitioner (NP) in the U.S., you should know that there are two types of NP programs: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs🧑‍⚕️👨‍⚕️👩‍⚕️

As you might have guessed, you will get a master’s degree when you graduate from an MSN program and a doctorate from a DNP program.

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties called for moving to the DNP degree as the entry-level preparation for NPs by 2025, which is this year!😳

But in reality, this effort has not been completed yet, and both programs still exist.

In this episode, I talked about the pros and cons of MSN and DNP programs for NP education to help you make the best career decision for you that matches your life goal✊

自信がある「様に見える」というのはアメリカ文化ではとっても大事なこと☝️

なぜならば自信がある＝信用できる・頼り甲斐があるという風に捉えられて、自信があるように見える人はより志望の学校に入学できたりやキャリアアップのチャンスを与えられたりするからです。

でも実は自分の英語に自信がまだないから、自信は当然でないよ、と言う方🫵

私自身NPになりたての頃は、より責任があり、外国語で外国でNPとして患者さんを診察することへの自信をつける、そして自信を持っているように見られることに苦労したのでとてもわかります。

About ME:

Hi I’m Miki Miura, DNP, APRN, FNP-C👋

I’m a family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Hawaii, USA.

I was born and raised in Japan🇯🇵. I moved to the U.S. to become an NP when I was 25 years old after working as a registered nurse in Japan✈️

English is my second language, and becoming an NP in the U.S. as a foreign-born international student wasn’t easy. But, I was able to achieve my dream as well as many dreams that I couldn’t even imagine before, which include being awarded the State Award for Excellence for the State of Hawaii by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners in 2024🏆

My mission is to empower nurses from all over the world to achieve their dreams of building successful and fulfilling nurse practitioner careers✨

One of my mottoes is “WORK HARD, PLAY HARD” (which, by the way, is my favorite phrase I learned from American culture😄). While I see patients at two clinical practices, run an online coaching business, and do many other things, I surf three to four times a week🏄‍♀️ and go on a vacation every three to four months🏝️

This ideal work-life balance is possible for you….if you learn how to study/work smart!!!💪
