Millions of people tune in to horse races like The Everest every year, with hundreds flocking to race courses and spending big.

But behind the glitz and glamour is an industry plagued with scandal. 

Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V'Landys spoke to Natalie Peters about a story which broke during the week concerning the slaughtering of retired racehorses.

He stressed that the differing laws between states are detrimental to the way horses are treated after they finish racing and things need to change.

"I think there's got to be a national law where there should be no horses in any abattoir," states V'Landys.

Mr V'Landys would love to see every retired racehorse re-homed, with millions of dollars being spent on properties around the country.

"It's not an easy task but it won't be through lack of trying to ensure that we do it."
