Kızılay, Ankara, Turkey – Tense scenes unfolded as crowds of teachers and education workers attempted to push through police barricades blocking a central street.
The footage, filmed by Sonsöz Reporter Melisa Sapaz, shows a dense crowd pressing forward against a line of white buses used as barriers. Dozens of men, many wearing red vests marked with “Labor” and “Action,” move together, clapping in rhythm and raising their hands as they try to advance.
Shot from within the crowd, the shaky video captures protesters pushing shoulder to shoulder, with visible determination and agitation. Some hold phones above their heads to record the moment as the group surges against the blockade.
Urban buildings line the street in the background, with visible signs including “Ankara Medical Chamber” and “Monopol Education Institutions” under overcast daylight.
The caption states, “Ankara At This Moment Barricades Are Being Attempted To Be Breached…”.
The events took place on April 16, 2026, during nationwide teacher protests triggered by recent deadly school shootings, including a shotgun attack in Şanlıurfa and a mass shooting in Kahramanmaraş that killed students and a teacher.
In Ankara, thousands of educators marched toward the Ministry of National Education, calling for the resignation of Education Minister Yusuf Tekin, increased school security, and an end to violence in education.
Police blocked access using barricades and buses, leading to standoffs, sit-ins, and repeated attempts to break through, as demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Shoulder To Shoulder Against Violence” and “Where Were You While The Children Were Dying?”. Similar protests took place across Turkey the same day.
