Kocaeli, Turkey – Thousands of teachers filled the streets of Kocaeli (İzmit) after refusing to enter classrooms, protesting rising violence in schools.
The march, filmed by İzel Gözde Meydan, shows a massive and tightly packed crowd of educators moving along a wide, tree-lined avenue under rows of red Turkish flags. Men and women of all ages, dressed in casual clothing, jackets, sunglasses, and headscarves, advanced together in bright daylight.
Participants clapped in unison as they walked, with some raising their hands or holding phones and signs. The procession stretched deep into the distance past modern buildings, including a Garanti BBVA bank branch, along with shops, parked cars, and yellow taxis.
The demonstration was part of a nationwide teacher work stoppage on April 15, 2026, organized by multiple education unions, including Eğitim Sen, Eğitim-İş, Türk Eğitim-Sen, and Eğitim-Bir-Sen.
The action followed a shotgun attack the previous day at Ahmet Koyuncu Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi in Siverek, Şanlıurfa, where a former student wounded 16 people, including teachers, students, a police officer, and a cafeteria worker.
In Kocaeli, teachers gathered at locations such as Sabri Yalım Parkı and İnsan Hakları Parkı before marching to the governor’s office and the Provincial Directorate of National Education. Protesters demanded immediate security measures in schools, an end to the violence, and accountability from Education Minister Yusuf Tekin.
Similar protests took place across Turkey on the same day.
