Putin and Zelenskyy Peace Talks in the Works; Three More Governors to Send Troops To Washington | NTD Good Morning (Aug. 19)
The Kremlin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and world leaders are weighing in on Monday’s historic peace talks in Washington. Moscow said the Trump–Putin call was “highly constructive,” with both leaders backing direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said a Putin–Zelenskyy meeting could happen within two weeks. Meanwhile, NATO chief Mark Rutte praised President Donald Trump as a pragmatic peacemaker.
Governors from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee are sending National Guard troops to Washington in support of Trump’s crime crackdown. District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser said the federal deployments don't make sense, and that crime is already declining. The White House pointed to the nearly 400 arrests made, while Trump signaled he may extend control or even declare a national emergency.
Hurricane Erin is passing the southeastern U.S. coast on Tuesday, and could pass the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Certain areas are facing a tropical storm watch, as well as mandatory evacuations.
