Hurricane Milton intensified into a Category 5 storm on Monday. Hurricane and storm surge watches and evacuation orders were issued for parts of Florida as Milton is on course to make landfall somewhere between Tampa and Naples on Wednesday night.

Pressure is mounting on House and Senate leadership to call lawmakers back to Washington to allocate additional funds to FEMA. President Biden wrote to Congress over the weekend, highlighting the funding shortfall, particularly within the Small Business Administration’s disaster recovery program. However, lawmakers are divided on the necessity of emergency funding. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) noted that states will need time to assess the actual damages from Hurricane Helene.

Helene’s death toll continues to climb—now to more than 200. North Carolinians have been hit hard, making up more than half of those deaths. Israel’s military urged residents in more than 20 towns in southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes immediately on Thursday, as it continues its ground operation. Israel is continuing its attacks aimed at further weakening the Hezbollah terrorist group. Three explosions were heard in the south of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, and several large plumes of smoke were visible after Israeli strikes overnight. The south of the city is a Hezbollah stronghold, and Iran also has a strong influence there.

Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally in Michigan at Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday. On Friday, the Trump campaign will kick off a bus tour through Georgia. Meanwhile, former congresswoman Liz Cheney will join Vice President Kamala Harris in Wisconsin on Thursday. The vocal Trump critic says the former president poses a threat to the U.S. Constitution. Cheney’s father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has also endorsed Harris.

Biden will make stops in Tallahassee and Perry, where he will also take an aerial tour of the devastation. Helene has caused at least 190 fatalities since it made landfall in Florida a week ago, with more than half of the deaths occurring in North Carolina. Hundreds remain missing, and officials are facing challenges in identifying some of the victims.

A federal judge in Washington released Special Counsel Jack Smith’s latest filing on Wednesday in the 2020 election case against former President Donald Trump. The 165-page document explains additional evidence that paints Trump’s alleged criminal actions as those of a private citizen. Smith filed a reworked indictment in response to the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling. Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, said the filing was “falsehood-ridden” and “unconstitutional.”

Israel struck central Beirut in Lebanon early on Thursday morning, in what was the first Israeli strike on the area since the 2006 Lebanon War. Lebanon’s health ministry said six people were killed. U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he would not support Israeli strikes on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear program in response to Iran’s recent missile attack on Israel.

Biden is expected to travel to Florida and Georgia on Thursday to survey storm damage caused by Hurricane Helene. The death toll is now above 190, with hundreds more missing. Thousands in North Carolina are still without water and essential supplies.
