Book deserts will not snuff out our voices. Our movement will continue to defy attacks on intellectual freedom. • The History, The Present, and The Future of the Librotraficante Movement.
As the tension over banned books, CRT, and ethnic studies heats up, we take a look at the past, the present, and future of the #Librotraificante movement. 10 years after Arizona lawmakers tried to ban books and ethnic studies in schools, a new wave of legislation and outcry swallow Texas politics.
Dan Patrick recently held a press conference attacking job security for professors at Texas public universities. He also proposed going after professors who teach Critical Race Theory.
This mumbo jumbo is vague for Kindergarten through 12th grade, where CRT is not taught. However, Patrick has crossed the border of higher education where the book "Critical Race Theory" can be part of a course, especially at higher levels. Worse, Patrick needs to clarify if he believes Mexican American History and African American History count as CRT in his opinion.
Is he attacking Mexican American History and African American History?
These are the topics that get swept up in rambling definitions of CRT. So Dan Patrick needs to reveal if he thinks Mexican American and African American History fall into his definition of CRT.

  • Tony speaks w/ showcases the 33rd Annual Accordion Kings & Queens produced by Texas Folklife.
Tony Diaz speaks with Sarah Rucker, one of the organizers for the event that is produced by Texas Folklife, and Randall Jackson, who's group RJ & Kreole Soul will be performing at the show. Tony & Sarah discuss the event and RJ provides great insight into the confluence of cultures that share the accordion.
Besides the interviews, we will feature music from the following artists who will be featured at the 33rd Annual Accordion Kings & Queens.
    - RJ & Kreole Smoove: Zydeco & Creole music featuring accordionist and touring musician Randall Jackson, who also won Texas Folklife’s Big Squeeze statewide accordion contest championship in 2014.
    - Las Fenix: Consisting of five sisters from Houston, Texas, this Norteño phenom has been on the rise and recently released their latest single Diganle just last year.
    - Cameron Dupuy & the Cajun Troubadours: Accordionist Cameron Dupuy not only won the Big Squeeze in 2021 but won 8 other contest titles before that and plays alongside his father Michael Dupuy in the band who received a Grammy nomination for their debut self-titled album, “Cameron Dupuy and the Cajun Troubadours” in late 2020.
Lastly, but always in first in our hearts, we moved forward with the show even in the shadows of the horrible tragedy in Uvalde recently. We pay our respects with a moment of silence but also feel it's necessary to produce this show; as RJ mentions in the interview, "...musicians are the healers of this world, healers of the land, we can get to people through our music, that's how powerful music is..."

We've had two shows discussing Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick's comments on CRT, University Tenure, and Mexican American Studies but folks asked "What did he REALLY say?"
