Liliana Valenzuela is the author of the poetry collections Codex of Love: Bendita ternura (FlowerSong Press, 2020) and Codex of Journeys: Bendito camino (Mouthfeel Press, 2013). Her poetry and essays have been widely anthologized, most recently in Latinas: An Anthology of Struggles & Protests in 21st Century USA. Valenzuela is also the acclaimed Spanish language translator of works by Cristina García, Julia Alvarez, Denise Chávez, and many other writers. Her most recent translation is Martita, I Remember You/Martita, te recuerdo, by Sandra Cisneros. And this fall, Vintage Español will publish her translation of Sandra Cisneros’ new poetry collection, Woman Without Shame/Mujer sin vergüenza. A CantoMundo and Macondo fellow, she collaborates with the Hablemos, escritoras podcast. Valenzuela is currently the editor of the Latin American Journalism Review at the University of Texas at Austin.

Maria Miranda Maloney is a Latina poet, editor, and bilingual publisher. She was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in a small farm community of mostly immigrant families. Her family's outings consisted of crossing the U.S-Mexico border every Sunday to visit family in Zaragoza, a town outside Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. She learned to navigate two different worlds, including language and traditions.

Maria is the founder of Mouthfeel Press a bilingual press that has published dozens of books of poetry in English and Spanish, and the author of Cracked Spaces (Pandora Lobo, 2021), The Lost Letters of Mileva (Pandora Lobo Productions Press, 2014) and The City I Love (Ranchos Press, 2011). Her poetry and essays have appeared in Bellevue Literary Review, MiPoesias, The Catholic Reporter, The Texas Review, Acentos Review, and other literary and international journals. She is the literary curator and Outreach Coordinator for The Smithsonian Latino Center, Washington D.C., and curator for the Wise Latina International's Writing Ourselves into History. Maria is editor for Arte Público Press, and a BorderSenses board member. She is currently a reading and writing teacher in East Texas. Her next book The Moon in Her Eyes is scheduled for release in 2023. She's currently working on her manuscript When We Were Sisters.

Carolina Monsiváis is the author of Somewhere Between Houston and El Paso, Elisa’s Hunger, and Descent. A dedicated advocate in the field of domestic violence and sexual assault, she has worked with survivors in Texas, New Mexico and Juárez. She earned degrees from the University of Houston (B.A) and New Mexico State University

Vincent "Chente" Cooper is a writer and previous US Marine living in San Antonio. His productions in collections incorporate Boundless, Refreshing San Antonio, Ban This: An Anthology of Chicano Literaturek, and Big Bridge Magazine: Refreshing San Antonio. His chapbook, Where the Reckless Ones Come was distributed by Aztlan Libre Press. "Zarzamora' his latest work has been described as poetry of survival and recounts through prose expereiences along one of San Antonio Texas' throughfares. Lastly, he is a member of The Macondo Writer's Workshop. His poems can be found in Huizache and Riversedge. He currently resides in the westside of San Antonio, TX.

Originally from Galveston, TX, Lupe Mendez (Writer // Educator // Activist) is the author WHY I AM LIKE TEQUILA (Willow Books, 2019), winner of the 2019 John A. Robertson Award for Best First Book of Poetry from the Texas Institute of Letters. He is the founder of Tintero Projects which works with emerging Latinx writers and other writers of color within the Texas Gulf Coast Region, with Houston as its hub. Lupe earned his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Texas @ El Paso. Mendez’s work can been seen in print and online formats including the Kenyon Review, Gulf Coast Journal, the Texas Review, the L.A. Dan Patrick recently held a press conference attacking job security for professors at Texas public universities. He also proposed going after professors who teach Critical Race Theory.

This mumbo jumbo is vague for Kindergarten through 12th grade, where CRT is not taught. However, Patrick has crossed the border of higher education where the book "Critical Race Theory" can be part of a course, especially at higher levels. Worse, Patrick needs to clarify if he believes Mexican American History and African American HIstory count as CRT in his opinion.

Is he attacking Mexican American History and African American History?

These are the topics that get swept up in rambling definitions of CRT. So Dan Patrick needs to reveal if he thinks Mexican American and African American History fall into his definition of CRT.

The Latino Bookstore & Gift Shop is proud to launch its Texas Author Series Friday, April 1, 2022. We will spotlight a Texas Latino author every first Friday after that.

We are thrilled to kick off this series with best-selling Latina author Reyna Grande with her new novel A Ballad of Love and Glory. As a girl, she crossed the US– México border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Her other books include the novels Across a Hundred Mountains and Dancing with Butterflies, and the memoirs The Distance Between Us: Young Reader’s Edition and A Dream Called Home.

Featured on Oprah's Book Club, NPR's Morning Edition, the BBC, CNN, Univision, and The New York Times, among others, Reyna Grande has become a powerful voice in the Latinx community and beyond.

The evening will be hosted by Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, Literary Curator of the Latino Bookstore. He said, “The work of Reyna Grande is a powerful example of how our Latino Bookstore provides Texans access to the leading voices in literature. We showcase works that exemplify the visions, struggles, and accomplishments of the Latino experience. This is a powerful novel that will be a great addition to any family library.”

Cristina Balli, Director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, which houses the Latino Bookstore, said, “This series is fun, educational, and shows off the literary treasures of San Antonio and the entire state. This adds to more reasons for families to visit San Antonio and for folks who live here to be proud.”

The Latino Bookstore’s Texas Author Series takes place every First Friday. Subsequent authors will represent the entire state of Texas. Their work also touches on many other aspects of Latino culture, Mexican American History, and the other art fields that the GCAC specializes in.

Roberto Tejada is the author of poetry collections Why the Assembly Disbanded (2022), Todo en el ahora (2015), Full Foreground (2012), Exposition Park (2010), and Mirrors for Gold (2006), as well as Still Nowhere in an Empty Vastness (2019), a LatinX poetics on colonial settlement and cultural counter-conquest in art and literature of the Americas. His writings on art and media history include the books National Camera: Photography and Mexico’s Image Environment (2009) and Celia Alvarez Muñoz (2009), as well as catalog essays in Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles, 1960-1980 (Hammer Museum, 2011) and Allora & Calzadilla: Specters of Noon (The Menil Collection, 2021). Tejada’s writing spans method, discipline, and form to address the political imagination and impurity of time in shared image environments; configurations of art, life, and language inclined to the future. He was awarded The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Poetry (2021).

Rodrigo Toscano is a poet and essayist based in New Orleans. He is the author of ten books of poetry. His most recent is The Charm & The Dread (Fence Books, 2022). His previous books include In Range, Explosion Rocks Springfield, Deck of Deeds, Collapsible Poetics Theater (a National Poetry Series selection), To Leveling Swerve, Platform, Partisans, and The Disparities. His poetry has appeared in over twenty anthologies, including, Voices Without Borders, Diasporic Avant Gardes, Imagined Theatres, In the Criminal’s Cabinet, Earth Bound, and Best American Poetry. Toscano has received a New York State Fellowship in Poetry. He won the Edwin Markham 2019 prize for poetry. His works have been translated into French, Dutch, Italian, German, Portuguese, Norwegian and Catalan. He works for the Labor Institute in conjunction with the United Steelworkers, the National Institute for Environmental Health Science, Communication Workers of America, National Day Laborers Organizing Network, and northwest tribes (Umatilla, Cayuse, Yakima, Nez Perce) working on educational training projects that involve environmental and labor justice, health & safety culture transformation. rodrigotoscano.com @Toscano200

Edward Vidaurre is the author of eight collections of poetry. Vidaurre’s poems have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Avalon Literary Review, The Acentos Review, Poetrybay, as well as other journals and anthologies.

He is the 2018-2019 City of McAllen,TX Poet Laureate and publisher of FlowerSong Press and its sister imprint Juventud Press. He has been nominated for the pushcart prize five times and was a finalist for Poet Laureate for the state of Texas.

David A. Romero is a Mexican-American spoken word artist from Diamond Bar, CA. Romero is the author of My Name Is Romero (FlowerSong Press), a book reviewed by Gustavo Arellano (¡Ask a Mexican!), Curtis Marez (University Babylon), and founding member of Ozomatli, Ulises Bella.

Romero has appeared at over seventy-five colleges and universities in thirty different states in the USA. Romero's work has been published in literary magazines in the United States, England, and Canada. Romero has opened for Latin Grammy winning bands Ozomatli and La Santa Cecilia. Romero's work has been published in anthologies alongside poets laureate Joy Harjo, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Luis J. Rodriguez, Jack Hirschman, and Tongo Eisen-Martin.

Romero has won the Uptown Slam at the historic Green Mill in Chicago; the birthplace of slam poetry. Romero offers a scholarship for high school seniors interested in spoken word and social justice: “The Romero Scholarship for Excellence in Spoken Word.” Romero's poetry deals with family, identity, social justice issues, and Latinx culture.
