In Episode 122 we kick off with the latest from the Rugby

Keeping with World Cups we have the latest from the Cricket World Cup in India, where New Zealand and the hosts have made good starts, whilst England bounced back from an opening defeat with a convincing win over Bangladesh.

We also have an update from the Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp, where Simone Biles becomes the most decorated gymnast ever with her 23rd world title. There were also golds for Britain’s Jake Jarman in the vault and Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan in the pommel horse.

In Rugby League, York Valkyrie made it 3rd time lucky in winning the Women’s Grand Final, whilst in the men’s play offs Catalans ended St Helens’ attempt to win 5 titles in a row, and will play Wigan in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, more marathon records tumbled in Chicago, as the footwear arms race hots up.

We’re joined again this week by Golf Professional Andy Wild to look back over the dramatic finale to a fantastic Ryder Cup weekend, with Europe beating USA 16.5-11.5. We discuss the atmosphere and all of the action as Luke Donald’s team regained the trophy in Rome.

Scotland kept their Rugby World Cup Quarter Final hopes alive with an 82-0 win over Romania, and New Zealand crushed Italy 96-17 to ensure nobody is writing them off yet.

In football we cover the Lionesses’ winning start to the Nations League, and we also discuss the controversial VAR decision in the Liverpool v Spurs game.

In Triathlon, Beth Potter’s win in Pontevedra also secured her the World Series title and puts her on the cusp of qualification for next year’s Olympics; meanwhile Wigan’s win at Leigh secured the Rugby League league leaders’ shield and gives the Pie Men a bye to the play off semi finals.

And lastly we bring you, as promised, the results from the World Stone Skimming Championships in Easdale-where a new champion was crowned.

With the Rugby World Cup getting underway, we are joined by Ireland fan Patrick Mullarkey to look at some of the highlights from an excellent opening weekend, including a big win for hosts France and Ireland, England and Wales all opening their accounts. He also shares his thoughts on how the next stages of the tournament could play out.

We discuss Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff’s wins in the US Open Tennis, as well as another title for Britain’s Alfie Hewitt, who beat his doubles partner Gordon Reid in the men’s wheelchair singles. The Great North Run saw the final professional race in the career of Sir Mo Farah, whilst in Mexico 11,000 of the 30,000 field were disqualified amidst accusations of people taking short cuts or riding bikes, cars and public transport to get to the finish. We really don’t make this up!

Following the flurry of cards and varying refereeing decisions in the first games of the World Cup, we encourage the match officials and World Rugby to get a grip and get more consistency in their decisions.

In Episode 117 we are joined by two professional tennis coaches, Justin Cook and his daughter Libby , as they share their thoughts on some of the standout performances from week one at the US Open and their predictions for the finals this weekend. In Rugby League, Wigan’s win over Salford meant they overtook Catalans at the top of the table, whilst at the bottom defeats for Castleford and Wakefield mean that there are still only 2 points between them in the relegation fight, with just 3 games left. Leigh and Huddersfield could possibly hold the record for the longest ever game – after the lights failed at Leigh on Friday night, they came back and finished the final 38 minutes of the game on Sunday afternoon!  And in rugby union, all of the teams have headed off to France ahead of the tournament starting this weekend, when the hosts take on New Zealand on Friday night.

Meanwhile in Scotland, Britain’s cyclists and para-cyclists sit top of the medal table with a combined haul of 32 golds, 16 silvers and 18 bronzes.

With teams finalising their line ups for the Rugby World Cup next month, we had a host of warm up games. England were dire losing to Wales, Eddie Jones still believes Australia can win after their 4th consecutive defeat since he took over, and Zander Fagerson became the first player to be sent off “from the bunker” in Scotland’s win over France.
