  • Squat Cobbler 3 – The Despair Factory
Mike and Kelly are joined by Mel for the 3rd Squat Cobbler!  News AND recommendations this week gang.
    The news:

    * Nurture & Support is returning!  Mel and Kelly will be back in action starting next week – publishing on an every other week schedule
    * Squat Cobbler will live on!  Mike and Kelly will continue their feeble (but endearing) attempts to fill the remaining schedule on “Non-Nurtured” weeks
    * Kelly is still pitching “Squatties” hard as a nickname for the (yet to be proven to exist) Squat Cobbler fan base.
    * Options for President got you down?  Need to move to Canada? Maple Match is here to help!

    Recommendations
Mike: Gensho – Boris with Merzbow

    * Another collaborative studio album by the Japanese rock band Boris and noise musician Merzbow
    * You can mix the two separate works together to create your own experience – or simple enjoy each on their own.
    * Available on vinyl or CD

    Kelly: Club Bald Move

    * Awesome independent podcasters – Jim and A. Ron.  You can join their club for only $12 a year! (or more if you like)
    * They podcast on a ton of different topics… TV shows, movies, Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Better Call Saul, Fargo, Twitch game sessions, and MUCH more
    * They also do commissioned podcasts – this has gotten Mike thinking

Mel: Firewatch by Campo Santo (game)

    * Firewatch is a mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness, where your only emotional lifeline is the person on the other end of a handheld radio
    * Enjoy the adventures of Henry and Delilah in a beautiful immersive game setting
    * Available on Steam and Playstation 4

  • Episode 115 – I don’t want your floppy bacon around my chicken
The amazingly awesome Julie Ann Emery joins Mel, Kelly, and Mike for recommendations and a wide ranging discussion that covers coloring, baked potatoes, rock and roll, Da Bears, falconry, and the evils of floppy bacon.
We didn’t make that description up, that is the actual show.
Julie Ann has appeared in Dexter, NCIS, CSI Miami, Fargo, Masters of Sex, and many many more.. but since Mike, Kelly, and Mel are all card carrying “Kettleheads”, our favorite role is the remarkable Betsy Kettleman from Better Call Saul.  She is also wonderfully engaging on Twitter and Instagram – and we are so happy she joined us for a show!
BTW, click on the image below for a nice animated GIF of Julie Ann’s “Kettleman coffee scene” from “Better Call Saul” that was mentioned in the podcast.

    Mel’s Recommendation:
    App: Pigment

    * The PREMIER adult coloring app
    * Pigment is available on iOS only
    * It is a free app with the ability to add in paid goodies
    * Works amazingly with Apple Pencil and iPad Pro (but not required)

    Mel’s artwork, as promised…

    Julie Ann’s Recommendation:
    Food: Baked potato awesomeness

    * Clean russet baking potatoes thoroughly
    * Coat in olive oil and sea salt
    * Do NOT wrap them up
    * Pop them in the oven around 425 for an hour to an hour and a half
    * Cut them open, top liberally (Julie Ann likes butter.. lots and lots and lots of butter) and enjoy… but save the skins
    * Cover the skins with cheese and pop them in the toaster oven for bonus baked potato skins!

Additional bacon cooking tip: Cook bacon in a cast iron skillet until you can pick it up like a stick.

    Mike’s Recommendation:

    Music: Guns N Roses

    * Mike provided a completely unbiased recommendation
    * He is a big fan of their super talented guitarist Richard Fortus
    * Also recommends their 2D/3D concert film “Appetite for Democracy“
    * Mike thinks these guys might be going places

Julie Ann and Mel’s Snuck in Second Recommendation:
    Movie: Lady Hawk (1985)

    * Stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Pfeiffer
    * Julie Ann disappointingly would throw no love to the vastly superior Sword and Sorcerer  (editorial opinion from Kelly)

    Kelly’s Recommendation:

    Documentary: The 85 Bears – 30 for 30

    * Part of the ESPN 30 for 30 series, this covers the 1985 Superbowl champs – Da Bears
    * If you are a Bears fan, you’ll LOVE it, if you aren’t, you’ll still really enjoy it
    * The documentary spends a lot of time on Buddy Ryan and the bonds he developed with the defensive players on the Bears
    * Plenty of time is spent with the wide cast of truly unique characters that made up this team.  Mad Mac, The Fridge, Mongo, Sweetness… what is not to love??

  • Squat Cobbler 2 – A hole in a soul
No one thought we would make it to two shows.  We did.  So there.

    Recommendations
    Kelly – 2048 (game)
Kelly shares another time waster.  The app is available on iOS and Android, and you can play it online here: http://2048game.com/
Mike – It Follows Soundtrack by Disasterpeace (music)
It appears Mike will only be recommending soundtracks on Squat Cobbler. But they are awesome, so deal with it.

  • Squat Cobbler 1 – It is always darkest
Nurture and Support will return!  We are not sure when though.  In the meantime, Mike and Kelly have decided to fill the void with a few recommendations to tide you over.
A warning to Nurture and Support listeners.  Mel’s ability to keep things on track is sorely lacking in Squat Cobbler.  It also appears that Squat Cobbler may (will) venture into, shall we say, more “colorful” adult language and topics.
For show 1 Mike and Kelly are joined by Christian Menses.  Christian is in Mike’s band Pagan.
    Buckle up.

  • Episode 114 – Two Freaks of Nature
Another time wasting game and a overlooked movie treasure this week gang…
    Kelly’s Recommendation:

    Game App: Two Dots

    * This is the sequel to Dots, and it’s FREE!
    * Connect Dots in a straight line WITHOUT TIME LIMITS AND STRESS!
    * It’s Cool to make SQUARES. *Hint*
    * Available on iOS and Google Play, etc.
    * They also epically Live Tweeted the Super Bowl. Check out their twitter feed from the link below.

    Mel’s Recommendation:

    Movie: Freaks of Nature (2015)

    * Get Out Undead or Alive!
    * Ever wonder what would happen if Vampires, Zombies, and Humans went to High School together? And then the Alien Apocalypse hits?
    * This hilarious horror spoof is just what you need folks. It has a star studded comedian cast. Bob Odenkirk Alert!
    * The Red Band Trailer is below folks. And it’s not safe for the kiddies!

  • Episode 113 – The Impossible Quest
This week an addicting app and the inside story behind a classic animated series.
    Mel’s Recommendation:

Game App: The Impossible Letter Game

    * It’s FREE!
    * The point is to find the Letter or Number that doesn’t belong. This sounds pretty easy, until you realize you’re already out of time. Then the letters start dancing around the screen in what is called “Turbulence”. You will hate Turbulence. I promise.
    * If you like immensely frustrating puzzle games, you’re gonna love this one.
    * There is a level for each letter of the alphabet and a number of puzzles per level.
    * It’s available on iOS and Android.

    Kelly’s Recommendation:

    Documentary:  Jonny Quest Documentary

    * Available for FREE on YouTube!
    * A cool documentary about how Hanna-Barbera went from Cartoon Movies to Prime Time Cartoons, culminating in the awesomeness of Jonny Quest!
    * This doc tells the story of how Jonny Quest came about as a new kind of animated story that was an Adventure.
    * I don’t care what they say, I loved Bandit! Watch the doc to find out why.

  • Episode 112 – 100 Pirates and a Rabbit
Dylan joins Mel and Kelly this week as a fun movie, a great TV series to binge watch, and a way to enjoy them with your friends are shared.
    Kelly’s Recommendation:

    Web Service/App: Rabbit

    * Rabbit is a service that allows up to 15 people to share pretty much anything on the web. Including whatever bad Syfy-ish movies you might have lying around.
    * Your friends do need to have a Rabbit account, then just invite them to your room, queue up a YouTube, Netflix, etc video and you can chat about it in real time either with video, voice, or text chat.
    * The web interface is super nice, and looks a lot better than G+ Hangouts do.
    * There is also an iPhone app, but it doesn’t yet work well on iPad.

    Dylan’s Recommendation:
Everybody say Hi to Dylan. He has a very active YouTube channel with lots of interesting discussions on all manner of topics including Doctor Who and various comics.

    Movie: The Pirate Movie (1982)

    * This spoofy gem from 1982 stars Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins (yes the one from Blue Lagoon)
    * This movie is almost the entire reason Dylan got to marry his lovely wife, Dawn.
    * It’s a nice little sort of remake of the Pirates of Penzance and is a MUSICAL! There is singing, nerdy girls, lots of pop culture references, and sexually frustrated pirates. We all like sexually frustrated pirates.
    * While it is available on DVD, the audio leaves a few things to be desired. See below for an alternative.

    Mel’s Recommendation:

    TV Series: The 100

    * This is a post apocalyptic dystopia. That’s really all we need to say, right?
    * Anyway, after a nuclear war, the last remnants of humanity live in an Ark cobbled together from 12 Space Stations. 97 years later, resources are low and our post apocalyptic dystopia decides to send 100 juvenile criminals down to the Ground to see if the radiation is better. It is, but something else survives and starts killing off the kids.
    * Despite being on The CW network, this show really delves into the moral choices such an existence can force one to make, and the inevitable consequences.
    * Season 1 and 2 are available on Netflix, and Season 3 recently started on the CW Thursday nights.

  • Episode 111 – ZENWATCH OUT! EVIL MONKEYS!!!
This week Mel hangs out with evil monkeys and Kelly gets a new toy.
    Mel’s Recommendation:

Comic: Clean Room by Gail Simone and John Davis-Hunt

    * This is a new psychological horror graphic novel available through Vertigo
    * Journalist Chloe Pierce sets out to discover the secrets behind a giant self-help guru’s organization that she believes is behind her fiance’s suicide. As her quest continues, she starts to experience some very disturbing visions/hallucinations. Will a visit to Astrid Mueller’s secret Clean Room answer all of her questions?
    * Prepare to be disturbed y’all. There are monkeys. Evil demon monkeys.

    Kelly’s Recommendation:

    Gadget: Asus ZenWatch 2

    * An inexpensive yet functional  smartwatch that works excellently for notifications and reminders without having to reach for your android phone.
    * It works with many apps you already use on your Android phone with more available regularly.
    * It also looks pretty good, with numerous wristbands available. Some feel that the bezel might be too big, but for $149 what are you really complaining about here?
    * Definitely give it a look if you’re in the market for a smartwatch.

    Social Media Recommendation:
David M Latt (@DavidMLatt):  has worked with the Asylum, to make many of our favorite Syfy channel movies, AND ZNATION!

  • Episode 110 – Free lottery tickets!
Sorry.  Really nothing about lottery tickets here, but this week’s podcast was tough to title.  We do have a couple of Netflix options for you this week though…
    Kelly’s Recommendation:

TV Series: Making A Murderer (Netflix)

    * A documentary about Steven Avery, who was convicted of sexual assault, found to be innocent 18 years later
    * However, he was arrested again after his release, this time for murder.
    * Warning, this show will likely cause you some frustration and possibly anger.

    Podcast: Rebutting a Murderer

    * When you finish watching Making A Murderer, check this out!
    * This short series deals with telling the other side of the story told in the Netflix (sometimes a bit shrilly).

    Mel’s Recommendation:

    Movie: After (2012)

    * A man and woman survive a bus crash, only to find that everyone else in their town is gone.
    * Alarmingly, the town seems to be surrounded by an ominous black mist.
    * If you’re a fan of The Expanse on Syfy, Steven Strait is in this one.
    * Make sure to watch to the end of the credits; there’s another scene that may change the way you interpret the movie.

    Social Media Recommendation:
@DeadpoolMovie: Do we really need to say anything else?

And here is the awesome, and quite un-Deadpool-like Amazon Prime commercial we chatted about.

  • Episode 109 – Brain Cloud Salvation
As you would expect, Mel recommends a Western and Kelly recommends a romantic comedy.  Like we do.
    Mel’s Recommendation:

    Movie: The Salvation (2014)

    * Stars Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Eva Green, among many others.
    * This a revenge story set in the Old West and you get to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan be a BAD GUY before you see him as Negan in The Walking Dead.
    * You can watch it for a short while on Showtime On Demand or on the Showtime App.

    Kelly’s Recommendation:

Movie: Joe vs The Volcano (1990)

    * Stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in a ROMANTIC COMEDY! Yes Folks, Kelly recommended a Romantic Comedy!
    * Tom Hanks plays “Joe”, a guy who works in the bleakest factory/office EVER, and he is diagnosed with a terminal Brain Cloud. He agrees to let a rich guy drop him into a volcano in exchange for a boatload of money to enjoy himself before he dies. From his Brain Cloud.
    * Meg Ryan is awesome playing 3 different roles.
    * Dig through your local discount DVD bins to pick this one up. Or pay $2.99 to catch on Amazon Video (Troll 2 costs that)
    * Watch the movie opening below.  You will HAVE to feel better about wherever you work!

    Mel’s Social Media Corner:
@DeathMedieval: Medieval Death Bot: tweets real deaths taken from medieval coroner’s notes.

John Funke, died 1348, having been sick in bed, rose to wandering at midnight as though he were mad, fell into a cesspit and there drowned.
