Legendary basketball coach and educator Coach Ted Gustus, Jr. has worked in some of the most challenging schools in communities in New York City for over 40 years. His own life experiences and successes with thousands of urban youth across Brooklyn and NYC, as described in his 1st book, “Confession of a M. A.D.(Making A Difference) Black Coach” has served as the fuel to create a fundamental paradigm shift in the way that inner city boys and young men are being “educated” and “coached. Coach Gustus has won numerous championships on and off the court, and has personally witnessed hundreds of his players move on to highly successful lives and careers in the NBA, Hollywood, broadcasting, teaching and more. As an alumnus of Canarsie High School, where he played with NBA greats, World B. Free and Geoff Huston, he has always had the desire to coach. He has coached at several NYC colleges and high schools such as, St. John’s University, Brooklyn College, and John Jay College.
He has coached and won several city and state championships at Nazareth Regional High School and Bishop Loughlin High School, Coach Gustus has been inducted into the Brooklyn USA Hall of Fame, as a basketball player, coach and teacher. He was also named a National Positive Coach Double Gold Award by the Positive Coaches Alliance, joining NBA great coaches such as Phil Jackson and Doc Rivers. He received a letter from the President of United States, Barack Obama, recognizing him for his life time achievements as a coach, educator, mentor, and community activist.
He has received citations, proclamations, and letters from NYC’s Mayor, Governor, City Councils, Assemblymen and women, Congressmen, for his lifetime achievements. He has been recognized by national, NYC press and media for being instrumental in the success of 4 time NBA All-star Rolando Blackman, 4 time NBA Champion John Salley, veteran NBA Referee Derek Richardson, Actor/Businessman Duane Martin, Nazareth HS All time leading scorer, Robert Phelps and a host of other very successful men that has played for him.
In 2011, Gustus was appointed to the largest Public School Athletic League (PSAL) in United States as the Borough of Brooklyn (NYC) Boys Basketball Commissioner. In Brooklyn, these High Schools produced a number of NBA players such as, Stephon Maurbury,Sebastian Telfair, Lance Stephenson, Gary Forbes, Bernard and Albert King, Connie Hawkins, Lenny Wilkins, Billy Cunningham, Pearl Washington, and Jerry Reynolds. Coach Gustus was inducted into the Nazareth High School Hall of Fame in 2013.
