Now we’ve got all the contrived new year bumph out the way let’s enjoy the New Year episode with some contrived, vaguely Dickensian bumph:

2019 might have been an absolute mound of turds, but it’s been another great year of gaming. Jonathan has spent most of it smacking down nightmarish monsters in Lordran, Minty’s been smacking down dragons in various quests, and Chris spent most of it smacking down coloured shapes in... Tetris.

NINTENDO FIFTY FOURRRRRRRR

THIS WEEK: Chris gets annoyed at shoddy portsmanship of a storied RPG franchise. Jonathan can't be bothered with Star Wars: Law and Order. Minty takes an extended dip in a rusty lake.

Let the boys' fifty fourth favourite videogames whisk you away on an island holiday! Or to another dimension by way of a portal in a mysterious underground facility! Or on a cross country roadtrip!

We challenge anyone to find a single episode of a podcast that includes conversation that flows seamlessly between Mario-themed waterboarding, the crowbar's cultural ascendency, and handheld stereoscopy's finest moment.

This week on Our Three Cents we have another eclectic triptych of games including an Italian-plumber-based-handheld-sporting RPG, a 32-bit odyssey about a man’s obsession with hiding in a cardboard box, and an epic adventure involving a black knight in the darkness of the night whilst you try to forge some lightness into the world!

Elsewhere, Chris spends his week killing time with Suicide Guy, and we also have a full debrief on Pokémon Sword & Shield, complete with the presentation of the 1st ever annual Jonathan Andrew Dunn Pokémon Awards. For this week's numbered entries, Minty goes for a splash with the Gamecube's legendary Wind Waker and regales its avian-come-oceanic story with the gusto of a Jackanory presenter; Chris shoots some baddies with a plastic pistol and a bulky cathode ray tube television in the fantastic home port of Time Crisis 2; and Jonathan goes deep on the late Clover Studio's ridiculously stylish whack-em-up Viewtiful Joe.

So come along and enjoy some of O3C's most impressive expletive bleeping, some silly callbacks for long term fans, everyone's favourite Pokémon, 'Floopididoop', as well as a LOT of curry.

In the rankings, a classic Nintendo game on a classic Nintendo system, a small fragment of AI experiencing isolation and “a big warm hug of a game.” Three really quite incredible games - real absolute bangers!

Also dogs. Well, more specifically requests for dogs. If it wasn’t implied in all our episodes previously, we now request dogs explicitly.

Dogs are great. We don’t deserve them.

After a brief, one-week hiatus to allow Jonathan to enjoy being newly married to his lovely lady wife, the boys are back in town (copyright Phil Lynott, lyrics used by permission of Vertigo Records) to once again celebrate their love of video games.

Tackling their 59th favourite video games of all time, listen intently as Jonathan gives Mario Kart 8 a big thumbs up; Minty gives a huge A-OK hand gesture in the general direction of A Link Between Worlds; and Chris gives a standing ovation to Plants vs Zombies.

Link visits a Mercedes Benz dealership on the outskirts of Hyrule Market! Dinosaurs duff each other up! Lands of both high and low topography fall into disrepair! Flooded literature! A shitty ouroborous! Plants inexplicably fighting zombies!

All of that, and probably a bit more: it's Our Three Cents.

Haha just kidding it’s the fellas from Our Three Cents here!

One of the benefits of paying homage to our favourite games over a period of literal years means we can show appreciation for loosely related public holidays and the like. This week, instead of our rose tinted lenses we’re looking through novelty pumpkin shaped glasses to bring you our favourite ghoulish games and monstrous memories.

Sit back, crack open a cold cauldron of spooky stew and enjoy the spinning of spine tingling gaming yarns (into cobwebs, the spookiest string).

The accusation that we three cents are just a bunch of Nintendo fanboys is usually unfounded! Especially given Chris’ notorious love of all things Mega Drive, and Jonathan’s salacious affair with the Sega Saturn library! But in an episode that touches on the three big Nintendo RPG series, it’s hard to argue that we don’t absolutely flipping love Nin-ruddy-tendo!

Swords, shields, monsters and incest - the main pillars of many games, are all present here! We also take some time to discuss the ongoing questing of Minty and his dragons whilst he attempts to escape rooms on his phone; Jonathan having a wonderful time venturing into the blind forest with Ori, and Chris’ tremendous disappointment with poorly ported retro games!
