  • #243 Pam and Charlie: Two Different Ideas for a Holiday
Show Notes  Hey Paul. We are so fortunate today to have as a guest my “reluctant to do podcasts” wife. After more than 200 episodes she has come on the show with me only one time—and that was from Italy, probably 3 or 4 years ago. Today is special. We haven’t seen each other in more than 10 days and have probably talked on the phone only three times… because she and her friends have been sooo busy. Pam and I have different ideas of the ideal vacation. Although I do like some activity and sightseeing, I must have time to rest and do nothing. Pam’s idea of rest only comes with the need to sleep, otherwise she is busy doing something. While I have been in Portugal alone, Pam has been in the UK with her sister, niece, and daughter-in-law. The have been to Scotland, Wales, Bath, and London in about 9 days. Yikes! I’d need hours of therapy to recover. So, let’s compare notes, both about our trips and what is important in life. And… by the way… you are going to love Pam!

  • Walking the Walk
If you really believe in the idea of "sustainable living", then it's not enough to just "talk the talk". You've got to "walk the walk" as well. Or in our guest's case "change your daily ride" from a gas guzzling, soccer mom's van into an earth friendly eBike.  For all her commutes (even with kids!)
That's the story of Deborah LaSalle from Boise, Idaho who co-founded Warm Springs Consulting, a "sustainability consulting firm" whose mission is to help organizations (including big mining companies) "be more efficient and trade-out carbon emitting technologies for those that maintain profitability in a way that's better for the planet".
So how could this "eco-friendly soccer mom" drive a gas guzzling mini van?  For Deb, the quest was clear. And her solution was the Pedego Stretch, a cargo carrying model that allowed her to take all her kids and all their gear wherever needed.
Deb lives six miles from her office and for all that travel back and forth to work plus her kids' school and sports activities, she's switched to an eBike.  Even using it for occasional travel downtown and to the airport as well. Estimating that she's been able to switch over at least 50% of her normal travel to something that just feels better (and more fun!) for everyone involved.
Ride along as she tells us all about it.  On the week's PEDEGO PODCAST. And how (at the end of the day) she truly believes she hasn't sacrificed anything. But found far more than she expected on this electric bike path that feels a bit more genuine and a whole lot better for her, her family and the world they live in.

    Quotes:
“I think one of the reasons I became a coach within the community is because…I didn't want people to struggle at the same level I did. Maybe I could help them to have less of that…but as I got through that struggle, I started to see that, wow, I was really bringing some beauty into the world, making a big impact.” Jim Coyle, (2:35)

“...There was a whole system that we had to set up and so it took a little bit of work, but it was well worth it for sure.” Jim Coyle, (5:27)

“....I think that a lot of times we, as entrepreneurs, set up a culture [where] we are the center of the universe that is the business. And that ultimately can cause a lot of problems for the business because everything then has to go through you because that's what you designed. I don't think that entrepreneurs realize they designed it that way, and then they whine about it...I do see that they cause their own pain.” Jim Coyle, (5:39)

“When people bring their full self to a company, [that] is when you get the full value from the individual.” Jim Coyle, (22:55)
“...I think that when we are the same person in all aspects of our lives…that's when we can really bring real value and love…to the world. I think that when we're putting energy into creating other personas, that doesn't work, and I do think the EOS Life helps with that.“ Jim Coyle, (23:07)

  • #242 Charlie in Lisbon: Adventures in Solitude
Show Notes  Hey Paul. Today, instead of sitting with you in studio, right now I am sitting on my sofa in my apartment in Lisbon, Portugal. I was out today roaming the town and finding myself surrounded by throngs of tourists. Man, I have a distaste for crowds. And I do have a bit of frustration with tourists that expect nationals to behave in ways that suit their personal desires. Life is different in a foreign country and, truthfully, that is precisely what makes a foreign country so attractive—it is “foreign.” This is a different kind of trip for me. I am spending more time in my apartment than usual, seeing fewer sights that usual because I am reading and writing. Still, I do not feel the same as I do at home. Different “home” with different people, foods, and habits. Please join Paul and me for an update on “Adventures in Solitude in Lisbon.”
