This week I'm taking a look at Bigfoot sightings in South America! Most people associate Sasquatch with the North American continent, but South America has its share of mysterious hairy humanoid sightings as well. A trucker sees a large, hairy ape-man in the Andes of Chile. Hunters spot a large hairy animal stand up on two legs and run away as they start shooting. A Brazilian man wakes up to find a one-eyes Mapinguari in his cabin roaring. All these stories and more are explored here, as well as the legends and folklore of these creatures, and I question if this cryptid isn't actually Bigfoot but an entirely different cryptid! The Selbyville Swamp Monster is a creature resembling Bigfoot that stalks the Great Cypress Swamp of Maryland and Delaware. The swamps here have a long, dark history of mysterious creatures, bootlegging, and slavery, and even the infamous hoax by Fred Stevens. Inspired by our recent Mammoth March hike, I looked into local Maryland and Delaware legends and found some truly spooky Bigfoot stories from the region. Two men see the dark figure of sasquatch on the side of the road while driving home one night, a woman on her way home from vacation sees a Bigfoot standing amongst the corn stalks in a cornfield, a student driving home from school one night sees Bigfoot standing by a telephone poll and sketches its face, a father and son spot two creatures crossing the road late one night, and two friends see a strange sasquatch with red eyes running across the road on all fours.
