St. Nick 是 Saint Nicholas 圣尼古拉斯，他是一位3世纪的圣徒，做很多好事，荷兰人特别喜欢他，他在很多欧洲国家都很有声望，荷兰人把他带到美国，荷兰语的St. Nick就演变成Santa Claus。
Kriss Kringle 来自于德语Christkindl，意思是“Christmas gift 圣诞礼物”和“Christ child 基督之子”。Christ child和St. Nick是有关系的，后来Kriss Kringle 也成为了圣诞老人的一个别名。

在美国的圣诞节习俗里，少不了姜饼人和姜饼屋，可以做礼物，自己吃或者只是做圣诞节装饰。据说，美国的圣诞节传统中用姜饼是来自于德语地区。著名的德国童话糖果屋故事里的糖果屋就是gingerbread house姜饼屋。

关于gingerbread这个词再来追根溯源一下~

gingerbread 在中世纪的时候是和面包、烘焙食物、发酵食物完全没有关系，它是一种用于烹饪和药用的姜糊。这个词最早是从中世纪法语gingebrat/gingembrat借过来的（gingebrat/gingembrat是法语ginger的衍生词）。在语言发展过程中，人们为了便利性，会把陌生的词改成熟悉的词，所以后半部分就变成了熟悉的bread，演变成了gingerbread。到了15世纪，gingerbread开始被用于制作蛋糕、饼干和面包，和今天“姜饼”联系了起来。
