Introducing Ashley Yanego! 

This interview with Ashley Yanego is the first of six episodes featuring the Strasburg, Virginia FFA chapter.  I was approached by National FFA, and they requested that I interview several students from this impressive chapter.  At the time that I conducted this interview Ashley was the outgoing president for her chapter and the incoming president for the Northern Region.

Ashley speaks very well and conducted a great interview.  What I was most impressed with was how she found a business that she wanted to work in, and she overcame obstacles to find employment there.  Initially the business was not hiring.  That did not stop her.  She knew that she needed to do volunteer work for FFA.  However, volunteer work is normally not done in "for profit" businesses. She did not allow that stop her.

Ashley worked to get special permission to work at this flower shop, stating how much it would teach her and how it was agriculturally related.  She received permission and then offered to volunteer at the shop.  Her offer was accepted and she started volunteering there.  Now, she is a paid employee and vital part of the business.

KEY IDEAS: 

Simon Huntley is the author of Cultivating Customers: A Farmer's Guide to Online Marketing.  This is book about the necessity of farmers, especially those in niche markets, using online marketing to build a customers base and raving fans.  In this book Simon does not just tell you why this is necessary, but he tells you how to accomplish this.

I was hooked right in the introduction.  As Simon explained some of what you would learn in this book I found myself imagining new and exciting horizons for my own farm.  I was able to see the day in which I had put all the right pieces in place and was totally self-sufficient, a full time farmer.

If transitioning your life to agricultural and rural living appeals to you, this is a book that needs to be on your shelf.

Introducing Riley Kienbaum! 

I was contacted by Riley's FFA Advisor, Stacy Reid.  She told me that Riley had a very unique SAE, and she thought I might be interested in it.  And, I was!

Riley's grandfather accidentally discovered a fossil bed on their property in Northern Idaho in the 1970's.  Since that time people have been coming from around the world to dig fossils that are in excess of 15 million years old!

Riley works on his family's property, guiding customers, getting them the supplies they need and answering their questions.  This had led to some interesting interactions for Riley.  For example, he has had people from China at his place looking for fossils.  35 scientists from NASA came there to prepare for their next Mars Rover.  And then there is the personal side of things with kids and adults expressing their gratitude to him for his help.

Now, John Deere has offered him a scholarship and an opportunity to travel and discuss the fossils on his property as well their significance to agriculture.  Riley is involved in entrepreneurship with the $10 charge to adults to dig fossils on his property.  But this is one business that will be difficult for anyone to replicate.  Beds of 15 million year old fossils don't come along every day
