    Vaccination Rate

As of the time of this recording the the population of the US are 43.3% fully vaccinated. That is pretty high compared to Canada, as here it is only at 12.2%, but we are not fully open and there are still a lot of restrictions.

    Tim Burton Composer

I can’t believe I couldn’t remember Danny Elfman at the time. Is scores are so iconic, whimsical, and wonderful. If you think you don’t know his work, unless you have been in a capsule devoid of sound for the last 40 years, you would be wrong. He has scored all of Tim Burtons films, the Men in Black films, Batman the Animated Series, and one of the most notable theme songs in history, The Simpsons theme. His work is so varied but also always has his clear mark.

Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
    Release: 2004
    Director: Danny Leiner
Stars: John Cho, Kal Penn, Neil Patrick Harris, Ethan Embry, Fred Willard

    Correction about Half Baked

So, I said this was made on the heels of the Chappelle’s Show popularity but that is incorrect, this movie actually came out 5 years before the show’s premiere in 2003.

    Ice Cream Shop

So, found the name of the ice cream shop, it was Dutch Dream. They made their own ice cream and cones. I will never know the deliciousness of the summer staple.

    White Castle in Canada

Ok so, there have never been any actual White Castle locations opened in Canada, but, they built a White Castle franchise in Caledon just for this film. The location is now a gas station. Another thing I learned is that apparently you can buy frozen White Castle burgers in Canada to satisfy that craving. I may have to track some down to see what the fuss is about or is that not the same as getting it from the real place?

    The Fear

Not to be confused with the Mark Wahlberg stalker flick Fear released in 1996, The Fear was a horror flick also from 1995. I don’t recognize most names in the cast but there is a cameo by one of the masters of horror, Wes Craven.

Children of the Corn with Mark Hamill?

Ok, so I tried to find which on this is but it turns out he was actually in Village of the Damned from 1995. These movies can be confused as their premises care very similar ie small towns and weird possessed kids. But Mark Hamill wasn’t the only famous face in that movie, he shared the screen with Christopher Reeve and Kirstie Alley. And according to IMDB, Seth Meyers was uncredited in the movie for playing a Trooper and John Carpenter is credited under the name “Rip Haight” who appears briefly as “Man at Gas Station Phone”.

    The Show Sarah Couldn’t Remember

    It is Shadow & Bone

    Anvil

This is a 2008 documentary that came out about the Canadian band Anvil. Here is the IMDB Link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1157605/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

    Missing Star Trek Voice

Ok, I now this will be shocking but I made a mistake about Star Trek. Shocker, I know. But when I looked it up it was that originally they were only going to bring back William Shatner and Leonard Nemoy to voice but Nimoy refused to come back unless they brought in the other actors. But there is one voice missing, Walter Koenig, as Chekov is not in the animated series.

    Short Ciruit

The first installment in this series came out in 1986, about a military robot that is struck by lightening and becomes alive. It is a silly movie that has a soft spot in my heart….but i do have a problem with the sterotypical depiction they have. The clip below is frm the 2nd movie that is a perfect example of what I mean

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0zmCUVB0Yw

Also here is a clip that features the Los Locos chant. This also made me realize this was filmed in Toronto. In this clip alone there are a couple of very recognizable locations including Duncan St, Bay and Front, and Bay and King St.

  • Episode 65 - Godzilla(1998) and The Golden Child

In this episode Sean Archer joins me in discussing the perplexing Godzilla (1998) and The Golden Child

    Godzilla
    Release: 1998
    Director: Roland Emmerich
Stars: Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria

    Golden Child
    Release: 1986
    Director: Michael Ritchie
Stars: Eddie Murphy, J.L. Reate, Charles Dance, Charlotte Lewis

    Simpsons cast

Apparently the Simpsons main cast make just over $300,000 per episode. So for a 22 episode season they make about $6.6 million a year. I gotta get me some voice work!

    George RR Martin Sci-Fi Series

The show’s called “Nightflyers”. It was a show that lasted 1 season that’s based on a novella and a series of short stories by Martin. The horror Sci-Fi show was about a group of scientists on a ship called the Nightflyer on their way to make first contact with an alien species. You can find it on Netflix.

    Is Manhattan built on Landfill?

Well, it is called reclaimed land. Which is a combination of all the dirt that is dug up for foundations or moved and also landfill. This is all compacted together until it is above water, leveled, and ready to take the weight of structures and vehicles. So this is not all of Manhattan but mostly Lower Manhattan. According to Wikipedia is the area south of 14th Street. This area includes Wall Street, The World Trade Centre Site, Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge, The Meat Packing District, SoHo, Greenwich Village, China Town, etc, so anywhere that all the cool people in movies and TV like to hang out.

    Puff Daddy Videos

Ok my remembering the story of the video is a little off. There is a concert Puff Daddy puts on but he isn’t trying to get there he just kind of ends of there after being shot out of an elevator and turning into an angel(?). And Godzilla isn’t dancing, it is that he is just making his way to see the concert…. That is all VERY ridiculous but it is still more enjoyable than the actual movie.

All About the Benjamins (Rock Remix)

I really like all the versions of this song but this mix just really gets me. I think it more has to do with the video than anything else.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaEMpAlppNE

The Rock was featured in a song? YES!

I really love this song! The beat, they lyrics, the video. IT”S SO GOOD!

    To Clarify

I noticed I misspoke, not a new thing, but when I said “You know its a good movie when you can watch it on mute and you still know what is going on”. What I should have said is, “you know it is good storytelling if you can watch it on mute and still know what is going on.” It is a small distinction but I think am important one that needed to be said. And this is because film is a visual medium and that medium should be used to tell the story.

    Who I was talking about

Genndy Tartakovsky – I feel so bad that I always get his name wrong and I really need to fix that. What he does is fantastic.

The Gross Part of movie Kate & Leopold

I had to find what this was and I do not remember this at all, either I just pushed it out of my mind or I just forgot cuz I haven’t seen the movie over 10 years, and what I found was that Stuart (The guy who went back in time) is Kate’s ex-boyfriend. She goes back in time to be with Leopold (who is Stuart’s great‑great‑grandfather) at the end of the movie and it turns out she is Stuarts great‑great‑grandmother. Ew.

    A Gnome Named Gnorm

Oh my. Sean’s description did not do this title justice. You have to watch this trailer yourself…. And yes, that is Anthony Michael Hall.

That’s right! People are listening and enjoying the show and I made it onto a list, the Feedspot Top 35 Canadian Movies Podcasts! It’s so exciting! I am at #31 but there are some great shows on the list and maybe if I keep this up it can only get better and I will find myself even high or even on more lists! Corpse Medicine

So, here is what I was talking about. It was an episode of the podcast Lore, and it is the first episode I ever listened to and it was depressing, gross, but utterly fascinating. Here is a link to this particular episode with the misleadingly normal sounding title and description. https://www.lorepodcast.com/episodes/episode-113-word-of-mouth

Things I pulled off my shelf

The green monster is Colin and I have to make a correction about the model… I called it a “Klingon Bird of Prey” but that is very wrong, it is a Klingon Attack cruiser, Vor’Cha class to be specific. And yes, that is an Enterprise model with a broken nacelle.

    Also, here’s Doyle and Maggie.

    Betamax

So, I looked up the timeline for this and production of Betamax players stopped in 2002 and the cassettes stopped in 2016. This seems crazy to me as I can’t remember seeing any of these things since the 90s but maybe that is just cuz I wasn’t looking for it.

    TMNT

This animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie came out in 2007. It is a decent film. Here is the IMDB link. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453556/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

For fun, here are the opening themes for the shows.

    https://youtu.be/M7VS-ZoeMqs

    …also Extreme Ghostbusters

This is a show I have never watched but here is the first episode.

    Pepper’s Ghost

Based on some googling. Pepper’s Ghost is an illusion technique named after English scientist John Henry Pepper (1821–1900). It utilizes a large glass screen, set at an angle, that catches a reflection from a brightly lit actor or object in an area hidden from the audience. The reflection seems like a ghostly figure and the lighting can be gradually brightened or dimmed to make the ghost image fade in or out of visibility.

Here’s a link to the Wiki if you want more info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper%27s_ghost

Also, here is Brendan’s pic he was referring to.

About Off My Shelf

From the publisher's feed

Off My Shelf is a podcast hosted by pop culture fanatic Tracey James who created it out of her love of visual tales and the curiosity of her friends. Every other week she sits down with a guest to…
