    Get Shorty TV Show

Here’s a link to the IMDB for the 2017-2019 show: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5761496/?ref_=tt_mv_close

I may have to track this down and torture myself. I am running out of other things to watch…

    Chili Palmer Credit

A small correction, Ernest ‘Chili’ Palmer is credited as “Bones’ Buddy #2”. It is the last acting credit shown.

Ghost World – The Graphic Novel

Ghost World is based on a graphic novel of the same name released in 1997 by Daniel Clowes. The graphic novel was a collection of 8 comic books originally released as issues 11-18 of Clowes’ comic series Eightball.

    You Do it to Yourself

If you didn’t know the Radiohead song I was refering to was “Just” that was part of their album The Bends released in 1995. I was a few years off. Also, the song and video, still AWESOME.

    Art School Confidential

Art School Confidential was a film released in 2006 starring Max Minghella, John Malkovich, and Anjelica Huston and a few other face you would recognize. It was based on another creation by Daniel Clowes but this time it was a 4-page comic that was part of issue #7 of Eightball.

    Trekkies

There are 2 of these documentaries, released 7 years apart, exploring the world of Star Trek Fans. They’re funny and weird and interesting to have a look at.

Trekkies (1997) and Trekkies 2 (2004) are both hosted by Denise Crosby. If you are into lighter documentaries these would be a great watch.

    Silent Velcro

Well we found out its a thing. Here is a link to what Austin read: https://jctucker.com/velcros-new-unidirectional-hth-719-quiet-closure-for-military-police-and-hunters-2/

There is a video that supposed to show how quiet it is and it is a lot quieter than regular Velcro but it isn’t silent.

    MCU in Chronological Order

Apparently, this is the chronological order

    • Captain America: The First Avenger (WWII)
    • Captain Marvel (1995)
    • Iron Man (2010)
    • Iron Man 2 (takes place after Iron Man)
    • The Incredible Hulk (time unspecified, pre-Avengers)
    • Thor (six months before Avengers)
    • The Avengers (2012)
    • Iron Man 3 (six months after The Avengers)
    • Thor: Dark World (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
    • Captain America: Winter Soldier (post-Avengers, pre-Ultron)
    • Guardians of the Galaxy (sometime in 2014)
    • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (after Guardians)
    • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
    • Ant-Man (2015)
    • Captain America: Civil War (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
    • Spider-Man: Homecoming (post-Civil War, pre-Infinity War)
    • Doctor Strange (2016)
    • Black Panther (2017)
    • Thor: Ragnarok (post-Ultron, pre-Infinity War)
    • Avengers: Infinity War (2017)
    • Ant-Man and The Wasp (ambiguous, but fits nicely between IW and Endgame)
    • Avengers: Endgame (starts in 2017, finishes in 2022)
    • Spider-Man: Far From Home (eight months post-Endgame)

I would argue the placement of The Incredible Hulk and Guardians of the Galaxy, both of which I would move up, but it makes sense to me.

  • Episode 60 - Futurama

In this episode Mike Suderman joined me in chatting about the nerdy Simpsons cousin of a show, Futurama

    Futurama
    Release: 1999
Creators: David X. Cohen, Matt Groening
Stars: Billy West, John DiMaggio, Katey Sagal, Phil LaMarr, Tress MacNeille, Lauren Tom

    “Early” Internet

BBS – “A bulletin board system or BBS is a computer server running software that allows users to connect to the system using a terminal program.” aka a whole bunch of text.

AOL – Here’s an article about it In memoriam: AOL CDs, history’s greatest junk mail. After reading imagine finding boxes of these things in your basement.

ICQ – Here’s the ICQ Wiki. Apparently it is still a thing. The sounds from this program are ingrained in my brain.

    Hyperloop

Apparently this was first mentioned by Elon Musk in 2012. He wanted to revolutionize transportation but he seems to have focused more on Tesla and SpaceX than this, well, at least publicly. Here is a link to a 58 page doc about it but if that is too long you can check out the Wiki.

The “Star Trek Episode” of Futurama

The episode I was referring to was the season 4 finale (E12) called “Where No Fan Has Gone Before”. This had almost all of the original series cast except for DeForest Kelly who had died and James Doohan. There was even a TNG cast member Jonathan Frakes.

    Simpsons Mysteries

Here is the video I was talking about. It is hard not to fall down the rabbit hole after watching this one.

    The Book Shayna Talks about

Ok it took me a minute to find this book as I kept searching “LMNOP” but though the title of the book sounds like that it is not that at all. The Book is “Ella Minnow Pea” by Mark Dunn released in 2001.

    Scary Story

So I found the story and apparently it is a scary story for…..kids. This isn’t where I originally saw the story, I can’t find that site but here is a link to another place I found it.

  • Episode 58 - Firefly and Serenity

In the first episode of 2021 Alix Cook and Mike Suderman are here to chat about short lived fan favourite show Firefly and its series concluding film Serenity.

    Firefly

    Creator: Joss Whedon
Stars: Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Strite

    When we first meet Simon

That really does have villain vibes all over it.

    Gina Torres

After looking her up, though she was on Xena, she was on one episode as Cleopatra, it seems that I may have gotten familiar with her on Hercules where she had a recurring character as Nebula.

    Yes, Hyena Spirits

The episode of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ that Alix referred to is “The Pack”; the sixth episode of season 1.

    Short live B-TV

G vs E – YES IT EXISTS! IMDB

It even has a cool poster.

The Sentinel – I don’t know why I used to watch this show, I remember it being pure cheese but it is now stuck in my head.

  • Episode 57 - The Third Annual Off My Shelf Christmas Extravaganza

It’s the third annual Off My Shelf Christmas Extravaganza!

For the holiday season I gathered a fantastic forum of friendly folks to fraternize about festive favourites to get us in a very merry Christmas spirit.

This year we are talking about tv. Holiday tv to be specific. Each of my guests picked a holiday favourite to talk about which includes episodes from Doctor Who, The Office, Supernatural, Community, and the X-Files.

    Doctor Who – S5E14 – “A Christmas Carol”

    The Office – S5E10 – “Moroccan Christmas”

    Supernatural –  S3E8 – “A Very Supernatural Christmas”

    Community – S2E11 – “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”

The X-Files – S6E6 – “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas”

    Dinsaurs on a Spaceship

This was the S7E2 of Doctor Who. I mean that is a pretty alluring title.

    Christian Kane

He has been in shows like Angel and The Librarians and in films such as Friday Night Lights and Just Married.

    The X-files

I can’t believe I misspoke when talking about this. But it was the first season when they moved to the show to LA. This was after the release of the movie.

    Dutch Christmas Tradition

The Blackface Dutch companion to Saint Nicholas is Zwarte Piet also known as Black Pete.

    Ferengi Ear Rubbing

Well, Sean was close as to what this is called Oo-mox. It is the act of messaging a Ferengi’s lobes which is kind of a sexual act as the ears are a major erogenous zone for the Ferengi.

    Christmas Quiz!!

    1. All these episodes chosen have this word in the episode title.
      • Christmas
      • At the end of the X-Files episode, Bing Crosby croons over a gruesome scene as he wishes you to have this kind of Christmas.
        • Merry little Christmas
        • Over his long career, Ed Asner has been in many holiday films, including this one, that many of you despise for some reason, where he plays the big man himself, Santa Claus.
          • Elf
          • In Supernatural, when trying to figure out what kind of creature they are looking for, Sam mentions several entities that he refers to as “Anti-Claus” including this one that several horror movies are based on.
            • Krampus
            • Sam and Dean also mention that many aspects of Christmas celebrations come from the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. What is this also known as?
              • Saturnalia
              • They Find out that a pegan god is feasting on people. One of those gods is played by Spencer Garrett, who has made a few appearances on this show that I can always find a connection to.
                • Star Trek
                • They don’t celebrate Christmas in star trek, but in this movie, while trapped in the Nexus, Picard’s perfect place and time seems to be an idealized Christmas with the family he never had.
                  • Star Trek Generations
                  • There is christmas in space however, but it is a little different as Doctor Who goes to a planet where these creatures are in the clouds
                    • Fish/Sharks
                    • An ideal Christmas is all Abed wants to have but when he can’t have it he has a mental break and his world seems to be in this kind of animation style.
                      • Stop motion
                      • In this fantasy world that Abed creates there are no traditional christmas songs but he does turn Troy into this classic christmas carol character.
                        • The little Drummer boy
                        • In the Office, all Angela wants is a traditional office christmas party, but she is not in charge this year, this coworker is
                          • Phyllis
                          • Angela goes along with all of Phyllis’ crazy demands because she is being blackmailed with what information?
                            • Angela is cheating on Andy with Dwight
                            • Besides Christmas, all the episodes surprisingly have this in common.
                              • Secrets
                                1. The office Phyllis blackmailing Angela
                                2. Community – Abed receiving bad news and not telling anyone
                                3. Doctor Who – Abigail and Kazran about her illness
                                4. Supernatural – Dean not telling Sam what their father does
                                5. X-Files – Mulder keeping the reason for the stake out to himself until Scully shows up and then stealing her keys
                                6. 3 hr 19 min
                                7. Episode 56 - Fifth Element and Fight Club

In this episode Mike Suderman and Leah Erbe chat about 2 fantastic films, in both the modern and classical sense, Fifth Element and Fight club

                                  Fifth Element
                                  Release: 1997
                                  Director: Luc Besson
Stars: Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker, Ian Holm

                                  Fight Club
                                  Release: 1999
                                  Director: David Fincher
Stars: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto

                                  The Comic Series

One of Luc Besson’s biggest influences and the basis of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the comic series “Valérian and Laureline”. It is a French science fiction comics series that was first published in 1967 that was created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. It was also an influence for Star Wars.

                                  Plavalaguna aka the Diva

The Diva is portrayed by French Actress Maiwenn Le Besco where the singing voice is provided by Albanian Opera Singer Inva Mula-Tchako.

                                  You Rock My World

Here is the video Leah was talking about. It is not animated but Chris Tucker is definitely in there….with Marlon Brando?!

                                  Evil Sphere

According to some googling the evil sphere is 1200 miles in diameter where as our moon is 2160 miles in diameter, so it is quite a bit smaller. But one thing is interesting is that it was stopped 62miles from the Earth’s surface where as our moon is 239,000 miles from earth. This means it should have a significant impact on the Earth.

                                  Fight Club 2 Correction

So, in my retelling of what I read in the “Fight Club 2” comic I said The narrator and Marla live in the Paper St house but I got that wrong. They live in a house in the suburbs but the Narrator does end but back at that house.

Also I was wrong on the release dates, The first issue of “Fight Club 2” was released in 2015 and the novel was released in 1996.

Also, there is a “Fight Club 3”. It is 12 issues released every month of 2019.

                                  Star Trek Connection

From Fifth Element Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister was Klaang in the premiere episode of “Star Trek Enterprise”

I also found a connection in Fight Club! Zach Grenier who portrayed Richard Chesler (the Narrator’s boss) was also in “Star Trek Enterprise” (S2E12 “The Catwalk).

                                8. Episode 55 - Fargo and Ferris Bueller's Day Off

We’re doing it again! I’ve taken over my friend Erika’s twitch stream to record this episode live! We’ll be talking about the movies Fargo and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off while we take questions and and comments.

This is an edited version of that conversation but if you would like to see the full stream check out the video here.

                                  Director: John Hughes
Stars: Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey

People who died in the movie

There were 7 killings in the movie all done by either Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare ) or Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi).

                                  • The Highway Patrol man – Shot by Gaear Grimsrud
                                  • The Driver of the car – Shot by Gaear Grimsrud
                                  • The Car Passenger – Shot by Gaear Grimsrud
                                  • Wade Gustafson (father-in-law) – Shot by Carl Showalter
                                  • Parking Attendant – Shot(?) by Carl Showalter – this happens off screen
                                  • Jean Lundegaard (wife) – We know she is killed by Gaear Grimsrud but how is unclear as it happens while Carl is on his mini-rampage
                                  • Carl Showalter – Axed and the shoved into a wood chipped by his partner in crime Gaear Grimsrud
                                  • Prince is in Fargo?

No. No he is not. A quick look up on IMDB gave me an answer to this.

“A symbol similar to the Artist Formerly Known as Prince is in the credits as “victim in field”, but it is not him, it is J. Todd Anderson, the storyboard artist.”

Weird Bunny and Sock Puppet References

                                    The Movie Harvey

The Rabbit in Donnie Darko aka Frank

Sock Puppets – It really doesn’t have anything to do with the rabbits it just popped into my mind. I guess it is fear related.

                                    Kenny Ortega

Erika didn’t have me completely sold on this guy cuz she only referenced him choreographing Dirty Dancing and Highschool Musical. Well I am sorry I didn’t know who this guy was because after looking up his filmography I was surprised the many things he had been apart of.

He is a choreographer and director and my people would be familiar with his work. He has choreographed some classic music videos such as Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical”, Madonna’s “Material Girl”, and Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” as well as dance sequences in films such as Xanadu, Pretty in Pink, and To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. But when it comes to the aforementioned High School Musical, he not only choreographed it but also directed it! That is much more impressive. IMDB

Also here are the music videos because the songs are now in my head.

The painting is even bigger than I thought. I said it was 3ftx5ft it is way bigger than that. It actually is 81.7 in × 121.25 in which is over 6ft x 10ft, more than double making it even more daunting seeming.

                                  • Episode 54 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Fantastic Mr. Fox

Austin Wong joined me in chatting about 2 whimsical and thoughtful films, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Fantastic Mr Fox.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
                                    Release: 2004
                                    Director: Michel Gondry
Stars: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst

                                    Fantastic Mr Fox
                                    Release: 2009
                                    Director: Wes Anderson
Stars: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe

                                    Manic Pixie Dream Girl

According to my googling, the term was coined by film critic Nathan Rabin after observing Kirsten Dunst’s character in Elizabethtown. He defines the troupe as a female character who “exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.” This definitely does describe Kate Hudson’s character in Almost Famous. But according to the Wiki, this does not include Kate Winslet’s character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind specifically for the line Austin mentioned. That seems incredibly subjective though…

                                    Michel Gondry

A French director that has 127 directing credits to his name according to his IMDB. They are mostly shorts, music videos with artist including Lenny Kravitz, Bjork, Beck, Daft Punk, etc…, and with acclaimed films sprinkled in between. Here are a few of my fave videos from him.

Here is the video Austin specifically speaks about. Its a strange and beautiful video.

                                    Castello Cavalcanti

That is the name of the short I butchered, the one by Wes Anderson for Prada, starring Jason Schwartzman.

                                    Alexandre Desplat

A French composer who has been composing for film since the mid 1980s. His filmography is extensive with 191 composer credits. He has scored many acclaimed films. In his career he has been nominated for 11 Oscars winning twice for original score for The Shape of Water in 2018 and for The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2015 where he competed against himself in the category where he was also nominated for The Imitation Game.

In this episode Sarah Behl is here to talk about the long running animated show Family Guy.

Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The untold Story – Episode 28-30 of season 4

Family Guy The Freaking Sweet Collection – A seemingly random collection of episodes from season 2 and 3 as well as a never before aired (at the time) episode “When You Wish Upon a Weinstein”

                                    Family Guy Cancellation

The Show was cancelled in May 2000, at the end of the second season. But by July, it seems the execs had a change of heart and ordered 13 more episodes of the show.

The show was again cancelled at the end of the third season, in 2002. After being sold to Cartoon Network it found a new fandom and found success on DVD, the show was brought in 2005 and has been on ever since.

Here are the 2 scenes we read. I know we didn’t do the voices, but read it in the voices of the characters, it will do it justice.

Hallowe’en 2020 (title tbd. Possibly “Quarantine Wolf” or “Candy Quarantine”)

Int. house. Day. Loise and Stewie meet upstairs in the hallway…

Loise: Oh, Stewie, you are dressed up as a Canadian Lumberjack for Hallowe’en? That’s so nice…

Stewie: Actually, I am a Nova Scotian Lobster fisher on my way to burn down a rival fishery…

Loise: Stewie! Those fishermen committed an act of violence on indiginous communities. Their actions are racist!

Stewie: There is no racism in Canada, woman. Justin Trudeau was on Lilly Singh’s late show, which means he knows an Indian. Also, sometimes he dresses like one…

Cut to Justin Trudeau in brown face on RuPaul’s Drag Race, and Ru saying “Your look is ill conceived, poorly executed and is a Tru Don’t.  Mr. Prime Minister, sashay away…”

                                    Introduction music… It seems today…

Brian: Oh, then don’t fall into the white guy vortex of the stand-up comedy section…

Peter: Hannah? Hey, that is not a man! That is a woman in a suit! I feel so vulnerable. (Peter clutching his housecoat around him.)

Ben Schwartz was the name I couldn’t remember. He voices Dewey. Danny Pudi is Huey while Bobby Moynihan is Louie.

The main female characters in the show are Della, Webby, and Mrs. Beakley voiced by Kate Micucci, Paget Brewster, and Toks Olagundoye.

The comic series was created by John Layman and Rob Guillory and published by Image comics between 2009 and 2016. So turns out I don’t have that much to catch up on cuz I have 8 of the 10 trades for the series. It really is a good read though. Just be prepared for weird (and kinda gross). Of and it is definitely not for kids.
