We’re back with another banned book, and this one landed on Utah’s banned book list earlier this year: What Girls Are Made Of by Elana K. Arnold.
It’s a quick read, and both of us pretty much immediately understood why Utah schools chose to pull it from shelves. You guessed it, folks: sex.
And in case you’re wondering, no, we still don’t think books should be banned. But at this point, we’ve read enough of them to have a pretty good idea what tends to send the book-ban crowd into a tizzy.
On a much lighter note, we love Fall.

Pumpkin Spice is Nice

We’ve got another work horror story for you this week, and this one is a doozy. Our listener send-in is a hiring and onboarding bait-and-switch nightmare. Because apparently, sometimes the job you interviewed for and the job you actually get are not the same.
We want to hear your work drama, workplace disasters, or even your wins. Send them our way at carey@offtheshelvespodcast.com. We promise to judge the situation, not you.

Just This: Be a F&$%ing Leader

It’s our 25th book, and we’re marking the occasion with The New Perimenopause by Mary Claire Haver, MD, which feels less like a book recommendation and more like required reading for women, especially those in their 30s wondering why everything suddenly feels… chaotic.
We’re also talking about the massive week in sports for the gals, Kentucky Derby, and the woman who absolutely shattered expectations by winning the Cocodona 250 and setting a new course record in the process. Hormones, horses, and 250-mile trail races. Just another week around here.

Zone of Chaos

It’s our first full episode, and we’re so excited! Today, Carey and Deb discuss Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood’s 2003 dystopian novel that has been banned at the state level in public schools. But why? That’s what we set out to find.
Grab a coffee—or your favorite beverage—and listen in!
We’ll also dive into Carey’s obsession with pre-ordering books. How much has she spent? And will we read the second book in Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Introducing: Off the Shelves Podcast with Carey & Debbie

This podcast was born out of frustration—and a desire for change. We’re two women juggling the demands of motherhood and careers, determined to channel our energy into something meaningful. Together, we’ll explore creativity, share our thoughts, learn from each other, and, yes, blow off some steam. We’ll tackle the big questions, the small victories, and the age-old dilemma: What’s for dinner?
