  • Theory Couples and University Pros and Cons w/ Ann Snelgrove-McKerracher
I had the joy and honor of speaking with Ann Snelgrove-McKerracher from Theory Underground about her own journey into theory. At the beginning of the talk, we touch briefly on the concept of “theory couples”, considering ways couples might create a deeper bond through a mutually humbling practice. We also had the chance to dive into her wonderful essay “The Idea of the Neoliberal University” and explore questions like what keeps students from seeking truth in the first place, what is the purpose of college these days anyways, and is the model sustainable. You can find Ann’s essay in the Underground Theory Anthology here; www.theory-underground.com Grateful for your time, Ann!

  • Self-Degradation and Technology with Sanduni Steinitz
It’s always a joy to speak with Sanduni on any and all topics. On this episode, Sandy and I discuss the pros and cons of cell phones and how our disposition toward technology also relates to our propensity of self-degradation. Another point we touched on is how our habits form our habitats and how we often get stuck in our own heads and why this self-enclosure can create a cozy torture (I smell jouissance), thus making it hard to identify that anything needs to change. We hope you enjoy this conversation!

  • “Owning Your Own Shadow” by Robert A. Johnson w/Amar Numanovic
I really enjoyed this conversation with Amar Numanovic concentrating on themes and ideas related to the book “Own Your Own Shadow” by Robert A. Johnson. We discuss how uncomfortable it is to face the unpleasant qualities of ourselves that we typically relegate to the shadow but how unbelievably important it is to look those qualities in the eyes and to redeem them. If not, we allow the shadow to control our lives without our conscious realizing of why we keep repeating the same things again and again. We also risk the spontaneous eruption of our shadow attributes, which is destructive and poisonous with no balance of the constructive. In contrast, we discuss doing the conscious work of dealing with the shadow so that it doesn’t become someone else’s problem and instead becomes a creative, restorative, and productive integration of our light and our shadow, where we consciously link the destructive and the constructive. The book and this conversation gave me such a better and more practical understanding of shadow work. I hope you will check it out and please also check out Amar’s Spotify and Substack, you can also find him on Instagram where he shares great content that always sparks in me the desire to do the work @amarnumann. • Love from a Philosophical Angle w/Emilio Manzanares Brito
I really enjoyed this conversation with Emilio, in which we discussed the most existential and life altering experiences; love. Love is a risk of course because it always hold the potential for heartbreak; we talk more about the phenomenology of heartache, the difference between falling in love vs to love someone, and how love is a far more nuanced and complex concept than in the movies, of which only glorify the chase. Please check out Emilio’s wonderful Substack, where he explores metacognition which allows us to understand how to do stuff and metaconcepts that expand the things we can do; https:/ourlittlegame.substack.com/

  • Motherhood and Creativity w/Caroline Holm
I had a truly delightful time speaking with poet, artist, and mother Caroline Holm about being mothers and writers/creators. Our children teach us so much and cause us to reflect on our own selves. In this way, we reparent as we parent, recognizing the unrealized patterns from our own childhoods. There can be so much complexity to human relationships but ultimately connection is the simple step that can always be returned to when things go awry. Connection takes presence, one of the easiest yet hardest gifts to give. We dive into these topics and more. Please check out Caroline’s incredible poetry and artwork through her website. She has a beautiful book that is available called “Woodland”; https://www.carolineholmpoetry.com/?fbclid=PAAaZhlm6Wh91sHdRX8FF2i_tVNWOnDg3P3bZt-VdsYl_T_bcJglbrqcc7LsM_aem_th_AddJJX354PB7hpfxZhSC1tmqAjfNNPKfuRDmpheHeAn5BCn2JXRFcV9P9kuIHNxiQvc

  • “The Wisdom of Birth” by Jacob Kishere w/Jacob Kishere
Such a delightful talk with Jacob Kishere discussing his insightful recording called “The Wisdom of Birth”. We may not all be biological mothers but in creating our lives with every decision or response to what we encounter, each person is a type of mother who can resonate with the gestational and birthing process. Birth is a rich metaphor and a sacred phenomenological event and we dive into the grueling and wonderful nature of it, illuminating its paradoxes and considering what the implications of motherhood are for each of us. We also talk about how faith radically shifts the perspective of birth, revealing the spiritual truths it embodies. Please check out Jacob’s great work at SENSESPACE as well as his tremendous substack for poetry, reflections, and more. Thank you! • “Thoughts for the Times on War and Death” by Sigmund Freud w/Dimitri Crooijmans
Great conversation with Dimitri on Freud’s essay. In light of events between Ukraine and Russia it felt apt to dive into this novel work by Freud. Tremendous insights in this essay and it was very illuminating to discuss the text with Dimitri. Though war is a probable impossibility (Bergson), we can work to be more honest with ourselves about our own relationship to death, thus preparing ourselves better for life itself. • Hegel’s Sublation in Real Life w/ Cadell Last
I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation with Cadell Last on the nitty gritty of sublation and what it looks like in real lived experience. We also talk about good addiction and the drive to feel the high. We also contemplate what may impact different responses to negativity. Please check out the amazing work Cadell is doing at The Philosophy Portal https://philosophyportal.online and subscribe to his Anchor/Spotify podcast! https://open.spotify.com/show/4LQceqEG5zz3KsEHolnlq6?si=xjQL-bK3QjipPraRaz6Ltg Cadell’s YouTube channel is also a wealth of knowledge, I’d highly recommend subscribing; https://youtube.com/@PhilosophyPortal
