We all have those friends we can go to get helpful advice or vent, but at times we can feel that they’re going more into “therapy talk” than girl talk. In this episode, Maryellen shares the differences in talking to a friend and going to therapy. From Maryellen’s personal experience, the first thing to point out is therapy is not expensive girl talk. Yes, you may chat about the latest episode on the Bachelor or Bachelorette with your therapist, but Maryellen explains how this conversation topic is to build comfort and a connection with clients, not so much your typical “girl talk”.
Now, here are the big 3 differences in therapy talk and girl talk:
1. You are biased with friends.
2. When talking about “gossip”, the reasons are different between friends and therapists.
3. Therapy conversations aren’t very fun.
Not only does Maryellen differentiate friends and therapists, but she also gives 2 scenarios on how to respond when friends are either depending on you to be a therapist or they are therapizing you. This is an episode you won’t want to miss that’s full of guidance on how to properly give advice to a friend and not act like their therapist, as well as clarify the purpose of therapists.
