Hear the same story twice. Once with a close friend, once with someone from work.

This time Shun joins me, and we tell two real stories in casual Japanese first, then in polite Japanese. The first one is about a friend whose marriage is falling apart. The second one is about the time my eye hurt for a week, and what the doctor found.

The casual version has zero control. This is how we actually talk with a close friend.

You don't need to catch every word. Notice how the vocabulary and the grammar change, and also what we choose to say. With a friend you can just say "dasa" (that's lame). With a coworker you say "shinpai desu ne" (that sounds worrying).

同じ話を、二つの話し方ではなします。一つは仲のいい友だちと、もう一つは職場の人とです。

今回はShunさんといっしょに、二つのストーリーをカジュアルな日本語とていねいな日本語ではなしました。

一つ目は、友だちの家庭がうまくいっていないという話。

二つ目は、目が一週間痛くて病院に行ったら、まつげが刺さっていた話です。

カジュアルのほうは、まったくコントロールしていません。

本当の友だちとの話し方です。

全部聞こえなくても大丈夫です。

言葉や文法がどう変わるかと、「何を言うか」も変わることに注目してみてください。

友だちには「ダサ」と言えますが、職場の人には「心配ですね」と言います。

I went to Yokosuka to see a friend who opened a flower shop. We talked about how she left the apparel world to work with flowers, and the people helping bring this small street back to life. On the same street, there's a shop run by two brothers who make clothes and leather goods, so we stopped in there too.
