TJ Norman and his family had a 2020 deer season for the ages. They drew 6 controlled hunt deer tags in North Western Oklahoma and put the time and effort into making the most of them. TJ himself was fortunate enough to tag not one but two mule deer in a state that most people don't know mule deer exist, much less that you can hunt them. John and TJ talk a little bit about the draw process and the work that went into making the Norman family so successful out in the field.

In todays hunting culture, people are told they can't go out and hunt unless they have the very best of everything. This week John talks about where the common man or woman should be spending their money on gear. It is in fact possible to go on a hunt without breaking the bank. When John went on his first elk hunt, he was wearing hand me down boots, a pack that was too small, and a $30 tent. Today his gear list is a little more sophisticated, and he uses his experiences in the woods and mountains to break down what is and what is not important to have with you.

Spring is in the air and water temps are rising! If bass weren't on your mind already, they will be after this episode. Today John is joined by bass guide and lake Eufaula record holder Bill Wright. Bill has been bass fishing for over 60 years and in the early 2000's came up with a better way to fish a carolina rig. On a fishing trip with bass legend Jimmy Houston, the two coined the phrase "Okie Rig" and the name stuck. Bill starts with some basic tackle recommendations for those just getting into the sport, and then gives a great explanation of how bass use a lake throughout the year. John and Bill then jump into all things Okie Rig and how to fish it. If you have ever had a desire to catch more or bigger bass, this is the episode for you!

This week on the show we discuss lead ammunition and if we as hunters should be transitioning to ammunition made from safer metals. We cover what impacts lead ammunition may have on the game we are harvesting and also various non-game species that come into contact with the lead. We also discussed differences in performance between lead and non-lead ammunition. Jason shared a story relating to the use of lead ammunition and having to remove components of the ammo from his meat. This leads to concerns of the meat becoming contaminated from prolonged exposure to lead and also concerns regarding the transmission of high lead levels in animals that scavenge the carcasses.
