Vernon Wallis was missing and was last seen on a night out with his friend Mr Burnett. He and Burnett had ended up in a run down gambling house run by a one legged soldier called Bill. Burnett told Nick Carter that Vernon had got into a card game with Bill and no matter what Bill did Vernon won. Burnett was afraid for him in a dive like that but Vernon told him to leave, which he did, but Vernon never arrived home. Mrs Wallis afraid for her husband asked Nick Carter to investigate and as he had a score to settle with Bill he agreed.
