In a relatively serious edition of Old v. Gold, we tackle the well-regarded 1988 action hit Die Hard, in which Bruce Willis single-handedly withstands the assault on an L.A. office building by Alan Rickman and his crew of well-moussed thugs. But can this man-against-the-world milestone withstand the decades of clichés and knockoffs it spawned?

This week, we “beam” our nostalgia on an “away mission” to the small screen and “scan” (STOP IT) a Season 1 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation — the second episode, “The Naked Now,” which itself hearkened back to the original series, once more showing what happens when the Enterprise crew gets infected by a strange … something … that makes everyone act not Starfleety at all.

Like no straight teenage boy ever, Billy (not the character’s name, but c’mon, he’s Billy) forgoes available girl sex to investigate whether a vampire lives next door, and his obsession leads him to the doorstep of actual actor Roddy McDowell. Will McDowell fend off the pesky teens and/or vampires? Will our heroes destroy the elder threat and his special live-in carpenter friend? Will one of the cast members go into adult entertainment? Tune in and learn!

Join us as we relive the adventures of young Josh Brolin, young Sean Astin, young Martha Plimpton, and old Throw Momma from the Train woman in Richard Donner’s 1985 examination of child safety, eminent domain, and the complex funeral arrangements of particular pirates.

Let’s just take a step back here and just contemplate the bad-guy character being named One-Eyed Willie.
