When reading difficult biblical passages, such as those where Jesus appears to dismiss His mother, it is a mistake to interpret them in isolation or through a purely personal lens. The true meaning of Scripture must be found within the 2,000-year tradition of the Church that Jesus Himself established. Jesus is not denigrating Mary but is instead elevating all believers by teaching that anyone who does the will of God—as Mary did most perfectly—is welcomed into His intimate family.

The true diabolical spirit is one of division, which manifests not only in societal conflicts regarding the sanctity of life but also in the internal fracture between our intellect and our emotions. Drawing from the life of Walter Ciszek, we see that Christ does not simply "paper over" our past, but enters into our deepest darkness and failures to transform them into light. True salvation requires us to abandon the illusion of our own self-sufficiency, allowing God to redeem even our sins and tragedies to open our hearts to others. Inspired by the witness of Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis despite pressure to "go along to get along," we are reminded that following Christ often looks like "insanity" to a world focused on common sense and self-preservation. Today, we face a similar choice to either stay silent as society denies fundamental truths about life and marriage or to risk being "canceled" for speaking what used to be common sense. We cannot be cowed into accepting untruths just to protect our privileged lifestyles; rather, we must have the courage to stand for the truth and set the world ablaze.

Judas may have been an optimist who betrayed Christ after becoming disillusioned when Jesus refused to act as a worldly, political king. Unlike secular optimism, which falsely expects immediate earthly progress, Christian hope acknowledges that the world is "running down" while looking toward ultimate salvation beyond this life. By rejecting utopian illusions and focusing on our eternal home, we find a joy that is far deeper and more resilient than mere worldly optimism.
