The notorious Chillenden murders stay long in the memory; Dr. Lin Russell and her six-year-old daughter Megan bludgeoned to death with a hammer. Her other daughter, nine-year-old Josie Russell, survived the attack, but with severe brain injuries. Michael Stone was given three life sentences for the attack but has maintained his innocence for three decades. The case still attracts controversy - lack of any real DNA evidence, a conviction that relied heavily on prison cell testimonies, the theory that a true serial killer was to blame.

Opus Dei, the highly secretive Catholic sect started by the Spanish priest Josemaría Escrivá in the 1920s has its tentacles spread all over the world. They claim it is a deeply religious order that helps ordinary people “love God and serve others through work well done, carried out with honesty and integrity”. Claims against the group accuse it of child grooming, human trafficking, and psychological and emotional control – claims Opus Dei categorically denies. Martine Vik Magnussen's body was found hidden under rubble in the basement of a block of flats in Great Portland Street, Marylebone, London, on 16 March 2008. She had been raped and murdered and died as the result of strangulation. Farouk Abdulhak, her one-time friend and who she was last seen with on the night of her death, is the son of billionaire and one of Yemen's wealthiest men Shaher Abdulhak. Early in the morning of November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were found brutally stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home in Moscow, Idaho. The victims were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. 

On Wednesday – in a sentencing hearing at Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho – Bryan Kohberger received four life terms as well as ten years for felony burglary. Those sentences will run consecutively and Kohberger has waived both any right to appeal or any chance of parole as part of a plea deal that sees him avoid the death penalty.

Early in the morning of November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were found brutally stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home in Moscow, Idaho. The victims were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. Maddie and Kaylee, both asleep in Maddie’s bed, were killed first. It was just after 4am but Xana was still up having ordered a food delivery; he stabbed her next before moving onto kill Ethan where he slept. There were no signs of forced entry - the lock of the door he slipped through was broken - and two other roommates inside the house survived. Weeks later, after an investigation shrouded in secrecy, authorities arrested the then 28-year-old Washington State University criminology Ph.D. student Bryan Kohberger at his family home in Pennsylvania. On July 2nd, Kohberger pled guilty to the murders, as part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. His sentencing has been set for Wednesday July 23rd, and he will spend the rest of his life in prison.

In December 2024, Urfan Sharif along with his wife Bainash Batool and brother Faisal Malik went to prison for their roles in the murder of 10-year-old Sara Sharif. 

This followed a 10-week trial at the Old Bailey where jurors and journalists were in tears when they heard in horrifying detail the abuse Sara suffered at the hands of her family members. In the early hours of the 10th of August 2023, Surrey police receive a phone call from a man named Urfan Sharif. During the phone call he confesses to killing his own daughter, 10 year-old Sara Sharif. What the police didn’t realise was that he was 1000s of miles away in Pakistan. He had gone on the run with his wife, brother and remaining children. In this episode we follow the extraordinary man-hunt conducted by the Pakistani police to flush out the wanted fugitives. We also examine the diplomatic minefield the police had to navigate in the absence of an extradition treaty between the UK and Pakistan.

In 2003, a man named Urfan Sharif arrived in the UK on a student visa after leaving his home in Jehlum, Pakistan. Sharif spent the next 20 years terrorising and abusing the women and children in his life. In this episode, Andy tracks these 20 years by speaking to other journalists that have covered this case. We also have an exclusive interview with Angelika, the woman who Sharif dated when he was 26 and she was still only a teenager. She recounts the controlling behaviour that eventually led to her being held captive and violently attacked. Finally we look at the missed opportunities that authorities had to stop Sharif, who would eventually go on to murder his 10-year-old daughter Sara in 2023.
