  • Sliced n Diced #13 Greenland

Update: OOPS! I’d attached Syria again—got it fixed now.

Fancy getting Nuuk'd next summer? It will likely be easier than ever thanks to the capital city’s new airport.

Greenland + Denmark are encouraging tourism to the island to strengthen the local economy and help encourage self sustainability. Listen in as we talk about how you can get to Greenland, why both are pushing for development now, and a bit of what you can expect once you’re REALLY out there and on the fringe.

  • On The Fringe #10 Syria

Subscribe below—we will have another Syria episode coming soon!

Hey all! Gav + I kicked around a Syria episode for a while. We’d planned to do one on Syria this week, but the events of the last 12? 24? 48? hours the Middle East have sent the country and the entire region heading down a path much quicker than anyone expected or imagined. (even though the signs were there).

We did our best to give you BACKGROUND so you can have a much greater understanding of this incredibly complex country and region that the media is not going to do. Gav goes very deep into important aspects of Syrian history, the al-Asaad family, and a few of the geopolitical ramifications this crisis will have on your life—whether you’re in Minsk, Mumbai, or Missoula.

If you enjoy the episode, please subscribe and share it with others who are interested :)

    Thanks!

  • Sliced n' Diced #12 Cairo Airport Woes

Hey all! We’ve got a topic today that is almost perfect for this show. It’s out there and ties into a BUNCH of stuff we’ve already talked about in past episodes.

Get the inside scoop as to why an airline mileage blogger from Florida became front page news in Egypt, and how Cairo’s Airport and Egypt’s government poorly handled the situation.

If you need a bit of background on Ethiopia and Egypt, go back to Episode 5 and Episode 6 — deep dives into Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

    Here’s the original blog post!

  • On the Fringe #11 Methanol Poisoning and Travel Safety

First and foremost, we send our condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in the last week from methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, Laos.

Davescapades is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

In this episode, Gav + I talk about a likely case of hospitality gone wrong in Laos. Backpackers from all over the world have been poisoned from drinking a bad batch of local vodka. We share some of our best travel tips for choosing what to eat and drink in a foreign country as well as some other incredibly important travel advice.

In a nutshell—if you go abroad (or to an unfamiliar area), control what you can (what you eat and drink, who you meet, how you’ll behave, and where you go) and have a plan to cope with what you can’t (weather, traffic, communication difficulties).

  • On the Fringe #10 Shakespearean Filipino Politics

Kamusta ka at Mangandan Gabi or Mangandan Umaga, wherever you are!

Gavin and I have been busy and haven’t been able to get a time to record until this past weekend. We know we’re behind in the count, so we’ve stepped it up and have a few REALLY interesting ones in the pipeline and one deck—so stay tuned. We’re releasing the 12th episode we’ve recorded and will release 10 and 11 soon.

Today, we’ve got another episode out on the Philippines. A political saga is unfolding of incredible proportions in the country, and it would make for a hell of a movie plot that we’ll all potentially be living in and affected by.

Don’t miss this one, and if you like it pass it on!

Feel free to throw a few rocks, a couple of bucks, or some comments our way as well, we appreciate all your feedback.

  • On the Fringe Episode 9: In with the Nu(santara)

    Hey all! Happy Halloween!

Davescapades is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Apologies for not getting an episode out over the last couple of weeks. Gav + I both had trouble with the Internet on another episode that we ultimately decided to scrap for now, (we will redo it later—promise. It’s a good one!!), then food poisoning literally kicked my ass for a few days. Am back up and running now though!

We’ve got a shorter episode on Nusantara, Indonesia’s slated future capital being cut out of the jungles of East Kalimantan Province on Borneo as we speak. The country has big plans for the future, and if you are at all interested in future sustainability and the future of Southeast Asia and development, don’t give this a miss.

If you enjoyed it, give us a like, comment, or pass it on. Terima kasih banyak!

  • Sliced n Diced #6: Eric Adams

Eric Adams, the current mayor of NYC, has recently been indicted and faces several charges. Some of which are bigger than the ones on an Amex Platinum card.

Curious about them? Have a listen!

  • Sliced n Diced! #5: Going Down Under

Yeah, so in this episode Gavin + I have a short go on OZ’s new law to restrict social media for kids to get them out on the footy field. Where’s Mr. G when you need him?

And, I reckon you'd be the bees knees if you get the ankle biters some fairy floss... 'Strewth, mate!

Translation: This episode is about the Australian Government’s reasons for attempting to pass a new law to restrict social media use for kids. And, I do go full bogan—just for kicks!

  • On the Fringe Episode 7: Peace Corps Indonesia

    Hey all!

In this episode, Gavin and I are talking about our time serving as Peace Corps Volunteers in Indonesia. We talk about why we joined, some of the things we learned and discovered from serving as Peace Corps Volunteers and intermix it with some really interesting stuff about Indonesia.

If you are curious about Peace Corps, about us, or about Indonesia, this episode is for YOU. And, we’ve got a LOT more in the works where this came from!

Your feedback will REALLY help us out on where we can make this better for you :) Take 30 seconds and throw a couple of rocks. We can’t take responsibility for carpal tunnel or broken computers though!

    Terima kasih banyak, ya!

    (thanks a lot!)
