  • 32. Dual Career Couples, This is For You
Dual career couples, two working parents juggling careers and family, is more common than ever. It’s also harder than ever right now living through the coronavirus crisis and juggling all of this.
I’ve seen stories over the last few months about working parents, particularly women, considering taking leaves from work, or quitting work altogether, because doing it all right now is unsustainable. Worst of all, I’ve heard of parents (again, mostly women) getting fired from their jobs because they can’t meet their employers’ expectations.
The couples who will emerge from all of this stronger are those who spend time bring very clear on who they are as a couple and what they value.
When my spouse and I were figuring this out all those years ago, there wasn’t nearly the openness of conversation about dual career couples as there is today. It’s so important for working parents to know they are not alone. This is my motivation for sharing our experiences with you. This episode will share the framework that has worked for us.
Your One Bold Move: Have a conversation with your spouse about your expectations, your values, and what is important to you right now.

  • 31. You Need a Career Sponsor
Your work alone will not always speak for itself. To advance at work, you’ll need someone to advocate for you—a career sponsor. The difference between mentorship and sponsorship: A mentor speaks to you and a sponsor speaks about you.
What makes someone a potential sponsor for you? They are in the room where decisions happen, they have power to make decisions, they know about your work, and they are willing to spend their political capital on you.
This episode provides tips for how to find a sponsor, how you might ask someone to be a sponsor for you, and why you should sponsor others when you are in the position to do so.
Your One Bold Move: Consider who in your worklife could serve as a sponsor for you. Reach out to have a conversation with them about your career goals and ask if they would be willing to advocate for you.

  • 30. Be an Inclusive Leader
Inclusion is an essential component of leadership. In addition to the positive feelings it creates for individuals on a team to feel that they belong, research shows it also contributes to productivity, collaboration, and decision-making.
This episode provides tips to create an inclusive culture within your organization.
Your One Bold Move: Develop these practices to become a more inclusive leader. Try out one aspect and begin to build the culture you and your team need to thrive.

  • 29. Returning to Work Amidst Coronavirus
As more states start to re-open, you may face a re-entry to work (and the commute that comes with it). If you work in an office, like I do, this can come with a lot of different feelings.
This episode provides tips to help you and your team prepare for a potential transition or return to work in an office.
Know that things will never be like what they were before. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, this is a sign that you are experiencing change—and with that comes growth.
I’m spending time reflecting on what I am learning from all of this and what I want to keep—or get rid of—for the future. How will you take what you’ve learned and bring the best of that to yourself and your leadership in the “new normal”?
Your One Bold Move: Help you and your team prepare for a potential transition or return to work in an office where you can feel as great as possible about next steps.

  • 28. Broadcasting Happiness
Where you focus your attention affects your happiness and success. You can meaningfully influence any interaction by how it starts. As a leader, I’ve found it powerful to share this idea with others.
This episode provides strategies to broadcast happiness to others, whether at work or in a personal conversation.
Remember: Everyone has the power to positively affect others. It does not matter where you are in the organization or what your title is. Broadcasting happiness is another chance to lead from where you are—and create moments others will remember positively.
Your One Bold Move: Use one of these strategies to broadcast happiness with your colleagues or your family. Your team and your loved ones need it right now—and so do you.

  • 27. Gratitude Changed My Career and My Life
I started practicing gratitude with intention many years ago when I was having a challenging time at work. It changed my outlook; and, in turn, how I experienced each day. This had positive effects on my career, my family, and my mental health. I believe you can benefit from adopting this practice, too.
Research shows that gratitude increases resilience, happiness, and self-awareness. It also has been found to lead to physical health benefits, including better sleep. To grow in your career, these are all qualities you’ll need, so think of it as an investment in your professional success.
This episode provides tips on how to develop and bring a gratitude mindset into your life with just a few minutes each day.
Your One Bold Move: Start writing down three things each morning or night that you are grateful for. No judgment if your list includes the latte from your favorite coffee shop. Gratitude comes in all forms and sizes.

  • 26. Set Goals for Yourself
If you don’t know where you are going, it can be hard to get there. Setting goals for personal milestones gives you something to work toward—and something to celebrate!
This episode provides tips for how to set goals for yourself and how to pivot when things don’t go as planned.
Here are some things to think through when setting goals for yourself:
What do you want to achieve?
How long will it take you?
What will success look like for you?
Why is this important to you?
Are you willing to make sacrifices to reach your goal?
Are you prepared for the journey or do you only hope for the outcome?
What systems will you put into place to achieve your goal?

  • 25. You Control Your Perception—and Your Actions
Earlier in my career, I developed a mantra: Assume good intentions. This was one of the most game-changing mindsets for me and enabled me to strengthen my confidence and decision-making at work. Since this shift allowed me to stop second-guessing what others thought of me and reallocate that time more productively, I’ve coached on it ever since.
However, as I’ve embarked on anti-racism learning, I realized that this mantra does not apply universally, particularly to people of color. Too often, Black people and people of color experience a look in the hallway that does mean something, or a colleague taking credit for their work or speaking over them in a meeting.
This episode shares my reflection on how intentions can be helpful, but our impact is more important.
Your One Bold Move: Spend time learning about bias and microagressions, so you can understand the best way to strengthen work relationships and support your colleagues. You control your perception—and your actions.

  • 24. Show Your Value to Your Manager - The NNTR Update
One of my favorite strategies I share with people who want to communicate clearly and consistently with their boss is the NNTR Update. NNTR as in No Need to Respond. It’s a twice weekly email update to your boss to share your value at work.
Many different bosses can benefit from this update, whether they are actively engaged with you or not frequently interacting with you.
It’s a chance for you to share on your own terms what you’re working on and what you’ve accomplished. Especially right now, when you can’t necessarily have a water cooler conversation or stop by the boss’ office, you can maintain contact and stay visible. And we know how important these things are to your advancement at work.
This episode provides tips on how to write your own NNTR update.
Your One Bold Move: Send an NNTR update to your boss with your plans for the week. Remember this is your chance to share your strengths and your awesomeness as much as it is your projects.

  • 23. Moving Forward
It's moving day for our family. I'm reflecting on the moves we've made to this point and how this one feels a bit different.
You can love one thing and still want to venture to do something new to support who you’re becoming.
This episode will remind you to embrace the moves on the way to who you’re becoming that scare you a bit, and also make you feel excited.
Still not feeling it? Here’s the mantra on making big moves that helps motivate me: Don’t focus so much on what may be gained, rather what you may lose if you don’t put yourself out there.
What are you holding back on?
What are you limiting for yourself?
Your One Bold Move: Make the move you’ve been thinking about. Today is your day to move forward.
