This is your midweek reset. Not to fix everything, but to come back to yourself. To breathe, to steady your heart, and to choose what heals.Today we’re talking about courage, forgiveness, and why love is the key.
Welcome back to Midweek Reflection.I’m JoAnn, and I’m really grateful you’re here.
This is our midweek reset for the rest of the week. A pause we can come back to when life is loud, when emotions are close to the surface, or when we can feel ourselves drifting.
And I want you to know something right up front. The breathing we do here is not just for you.
It helps me too.
It helps me steady my thoughts and stay focused on my own healing journey. And I believe this is one of those beautiful truths: when you help others, you help yourself. So today, we are doing this together.
Let’s begin. Put your hand on your chest and just breathe like you’re giving yourself permission to be here.
Slow breath in.Hold for just a moment.Slow breath out.
Again. Inhale.Exhale.
January’s theme is courage. And today I want to talk about a kind of courage we do not always name.
The courage to love.
Because love is not just a feeling. Love is a choice.Love is a spiritual force.
And today’s reset is this: Love is the key
Let me take you to the verse that’s been holding me. This is what I’ve been coming back to when my thoughts start spinning and my heart feels heavy.
“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.”1 John 4:18 (KJV)
Let that truth settle in your spirit.
That verse has been speaking to me all week. And when life starts moving fast, it’s easy for peace to slip and fear to rise.
And if we’re being honest, midweek is often where fear starts talking the loudest.Fear about what you can’t control.Fear about what you lost.Fear about what you’re carrying.Fear about what’s ahead.
And fear does not just show up as panic.Sometimes fear shows up as anger.Sometimes fear shows up as shutting down.Sometimes fear shows up as bitterness.Sometimes fear shows up as self-hate.
So when I say love is the key, I’m not saying that in a light, feel-good way.
I mean this.
Only love can confront what tries to destroy you from the inside out.
Only love can stand in front of self-hate and say, “You don’t get to live here anymore.”Only love can stand in front of fear and say, “You are not in charge.”Only love can stand in front of evil and say, “I will not become what harmed me.”
And this is where we go deeper, because forgiveness is not an easy assignment.
If you are on a forgiveness journey, you already know that.Forgiveness asks you to face what hurt you without downplaying it.It asks you to tell the truth about what happened. It asks you to stop letting the pain lead the way.And sometimes it asks you to release what your heart has been gripping for years.
That takes courage.
And that is why love is the key, especially when it comes to forgiveness.
Because forgiveness is not just about what someone else did.Forgiveness is also about what happens inside of you because of what they did.
The replay. The anger. The tension in your body. The way it affects your sleep. The way it steals your peace. The way it keeps the wound open.
So here is something I want you to hear clearly.
Forgiveness is not pretending it didn’t hurt.Forgiveness is not saying it was okay.Forgiveness is not saying they deserve access to you.
Forgiveness is release.
It is saying, “This will not have the final say over who I become.”
And that right there is courage.
Now lets go a little deeper..
Love is the key because love is the only thing powerful enough to keep your heart tender without keeping you trapped.
Fear says, “If you let this go, I won’t be protected.”Love says, “You can be protected without being poisoned.”
Fear says, “If I forgive, they win.”Love says, “If you heal, you win.”
Self-hate says, “You should have known better.”Love says, “You are learning, and you are growing, and you are still worthy of grace.”
And listen, love does not mean you allow what is harmful.Love can be a boundary.Love can be distance.Love can be a calm, clear “no.”
And just so we’re clear, forgiveness isn’t always reconciliation.
Forgiveness is not always a conversation.Sometimes forgiveness is something you do between you and God, so you can breathe again.
And if you’re sitting here thinking, “I want to forgive, but I don’t know how,” start here.
Start with willingness.
Even if all you can say right now is:“Lord, make me willing to forgive.”
Willingness is sometimes the bravest place you can start. When you’re hurt, forgiveness can feel impossible, so you begin with willingness, because it’s honest. And even if you’re still angry or afraid, choosing willingness is still courage.
That counts.
Because courage is not always feeling strong.Courage is sometimes coming back to the work again and again, one honest step at a time.
And here is another truth I want to honor today.
Every problem we encounter can become part of the path that shapes us.Not because the problem was good. Not because we asked for it.But because God can use it to form something deeper in us.
So yes, honor your journey.Honor the place of your healing.Honor the days you feel steady and the days you feel undone. You are not failing because it’s hard. You are human, and you are doing holy work.
Now let’s bring it to a midweek practice you can actually use.
Take a moment and ask yourself this, slowly.
What is the loving response I need right now?Not the reactive response. The loving one.
Where am I battling myself?Where am I speaking to myself in a way I would never speak to someone I love?
And what is the next loving step I can take today? Not the whole staircase. Just the next step.
And once you have that, take one small step in that direction.
One act of love toward God:“Lord, lead me today. Keep my heart clean. Keep me steady.”
One act of love toward yourself:Rest. Eat. Drink water. Take a walk. Turn down the noise. Speak gently to yourself.
One act of love toward your healing:Release one thought that keeps reopening the wound. Just for today.
So as you move through the rest of this week, I want to leave you with something to hold on to, and something to sit with.
First, here is your affirmation for the week. Say it slowly, and say it like you mean it.
Love leads me. God steadies me. Courage strengthens me.
And here is your journaling question, not to pressure you, but to guide you gently.
What is one small way I can love myself through forgiveness this week, and what would that look like today?
If you want, keep it simple.Write one sentence.Choose one small step. And ask God to meet you in it.
Because you do not have to do this perfectly. You just have to stay present. You just have to keep choosing what heals.
Now take a breath with me.
Inhale.Exhale.
You are not alone in this.I’m on this journey too.And we are going to keep showing up, even in small steps, even on the hard days.
Thank you for being here with me today.May your heart be guarded, your mind be settled, and your spirit be strengthened as you move through the rest of the week.
One breath, One step, One day at a time.
