This speech spotlight episode features Rock Springs High School alum, Kennedy Nicole Thompson.  Kennedy was a four-year Tiger, successful PF debater, and the 2021 Wyoming State Champion in Original Oratory.  The speech that she is sharing with us today is her State Champion speech called “Mad Woman.”  

A quick word about how to use these speech spotlight episodes.  First, enjoy an excellent, very well done speech.  The speech spotlight is another opportunity for students to share their unique and powerful voice to an audience in an audio format. So, sit back and enjoy some brilliance from our speech and debate community.  Second,  consider how you might use this speech as a model for anyone who is looking to write and perform their own original oratories.  Third, these speeches could be excellent learning tools for coaches and competitors.  Actively reflecting on what makes a speech powerful, effective, or even flawed can help coaches and competitors add more tools and ideas to their own speaking toolboxes.

In this quick episode, Team Wyoming coach Lawrence Zhou reflects on the January/February 2022 Lincoln-Douglas debate topic, Resolved: The appropriation of outer space by private entities is unjust, as it was debated at some recent tournaments. Lawrence offers three observations about how this topic has played out so far including some thoughts about the importance of the word “unjust” and how to think through what “appropriation” means.

The Half Hour is a current events podcast designed with the intention of helping Extemp competitors (and other Speech and Debate members, as well as listening for the general public) understand the importance of political, social, or economical events on a domestic and international scale. Each episode looks at both sides of current events while providing background information to help expand upon the issue. The Half Hour also looks into common questions that people may be asked relating to current events and will work to answer them based on credible news sources from both sides

Description of Podcast
The owners and the players could not reach a deal by the December 1, 2021 deadline. So, the owners of MLB made a move: to lockout the offseason from not having negotiations for free agents to teams not being able to talk with players. Plus, the rising unions and strikes that are occurring in the U.S. are giving reason as to why the lockout may be just more than the owners’ unwillingness to cooperate.

Lizzy Cozzens, a four-year Rock Springs Tiger, team leader, and talented orator who delivered many strong platform speeches back in her competition days dropped in for a chat about all things Oratory on this Speech Love episode on One Clap Speech and Debate.  In a previous Speech Spotlight episode, Lizzy shared one her favorite oratories - a powerful speech entitled "Deadly Dancing." Spencer Travis is here to talk about the current Public Forum resolution which is all about cryptocurrency.   Spencer is currently studying Political Science at the University of Wyoming.  He competed in Speech and Debate for four years at Green River, and his career there was highlighted by two top five State finishes and a finish in the Top 90 of International Extemporaneous Speaking at the National Speech and Debate Tournament.

You all know Spencer as one of the hosts of The Half Hour podcast - which has been a powerful resource for Extemporaneous Speakers.  Today he took time to give us a topic overview of the current Public Forum topic, discuss the new topic for next month a bit, and talk about what was next for YuYu and Spencer on The Half Hour.  We know that the crypto resolution is almost over, but we think this discussion could be valuable knowledge and give ideas to extemporaneous speakers and debaters nonetheless.
