" One Day I Decided... Yes, a twelve step program is for me. "
Ep 1. Spirituality, Connection, & Higher Power - Hurts, Habits, & Hang Ups (Karen's Story)
In the first episode of the season I meet with Karen who shares her story and about early pain she encountered while growing up in the church, struggles with ED, and how discovery of her husbands porn addiction helped her find recovery from alcohol addiction. In her story she discusses how insecurities and codependency added to her addiction and created an unmanageable life but how her ability to keep faith in her spirituality has paved her way to health and happiness.
Karen's recovery and personal program became her passion and career and forever changed her life. Karen and her husband recently became ministry leaders of Celebrate Recovery a 12 step based christian recovery program that originated out of an Orange County church that’s practices are now present in over 30,000 churches in the US. They launched their program at Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Santa Ana, CA, during the pandemic and have devoted their recovery to others. The program helps people in recovery from addiction (all types), mental illness and codependency heal and recover with the support of 12 step and peer groups led by Karen and her husband.

"One Day I Decided.... to help others. "
Jennifer finishes of our Mental Health season by sharing her story and steps to finding her path as a giver professionally. In this episode she dives into growing up in a house very familiar with recovery and how she ended up with a private practice working as a LMFT (previously working for 6 years in the addiction treatment field.) Does helping and compassion run in the family?
Jennifer shares passionate insight on her chosen topic to discuss understanding the importance of "caring for the giver" in todays world that is focused so much on "suiting up and showing up." Jennifer and I discuss different ways this view has been detrimental to those in healing fields as well as those who are seeking the healing. How can we as a society begin to be more aware of what we give and take to balance it all for a more obtainable mental health balance?
Enjoy!
