How we experience Christmas depends entirely upon the orientation of our hearts. If our hearts are oriented towards celebrating, worshiping, and venerating the coming of Jesus, we will find Christmas to be a time of spiritual vitality, peace, and joy. But if we fall prey to the temptation of orienting our hearts toward our own desires, needs, and wants, we will find ourselves in a state of distress and agitation. This week, we contrast the Christmas experience of the Magi with the experience of King Herod, and we ask ourselves, “what is the orientation of my heart this Christmas season?”

All of us long to be loved, affirmed, accepted, and embraced.

But at some point in our lives we’ve all been on the outside looking in. We’ve all felt alienated, isolated, lonely and alone. As we look at the story of Christmas, we see a powerful theme emerge. We see God calling the nearby shepherds and the far-away Magi. One group was Jewish, the other gentile. One group was poor, the other rich. One group were humble laborers, the other elite intellectuals. The two groups could not have been more different in terms of their culture, ethnicity, education, religion, and economic status. And yet God called all of them to come and worship baby Jesus. The story of Christmas is a story about God’s love for everyone -- even you!

During the Christmas season, sometimes our thoughts turn toward ourselves: our wants, our hopes, our desires. Ironically, during the holiday that is supposed to be focused on generosity, giving, and gestures of goodwill, we can tend to become consumerist and self-absorbed. But an obscure supporting character in the Bible reminds us how to experience Christmas in a way that brings deep meaning and value to others, and deep joy to ourselves. His name is Joseph, and he points the way to living a life of significance as a supporting character in God’s grand story.

All of us feel inadequate from time to time. We all occasionally feel like we don’t have the ability, skill, or strength to accomplish what God really wants us to accomplish. In the Book of Judges, we meet a man who feels completely inadequate to accomplish God’s calling for his life. But through a series of encounters with God, he comes to realize that God is faithful and sufficient to accomplish his will through us, irrespective of our inadequacies. Be encouraged today! Jesus said that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. In the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he expands on that theme. He reminds the Philippians of the mindset of Jesus -- a mindset of humility, service, and sacrifice -- and he calls us to adopt and embrace the mindset of Christ. Then he reminds us of the result of embracing that mindset. In the case of Jesus, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name. When we walk with Jesus in humility, he invites us to join him in his glory! Join us today for a powerful message titled “Rising High by Bowing Low.”
