We all want to be strong. We like to hide our weaknesses, and reveal our strengths. But what if doing so actually limits God’s ability to use us? We learn from the life of the Apostle Paul that if we truly want to be strong, we’ve got to lead with our weaknesses. God can’t use people who refuse to expose their weaknesses. But God can do unimaginably powerful things through those who embrace God’s power in the midst of their weakness.

The Japanese have coined a newterm: Karoshi. The word literally means “death by overwork.” The term was coined after multiple people died who were all working excessive hours under high stress with little sleep, and little time for rest and refreshment. While the term was coined in Japan, the phenomenon can be witnessed around the world.

While most of us are not in danger of literally dying from overwork, nearly all of us know what it’s like to occasionally find ourselves under intense pressure for long periods of time with insufficient rest and high levels of stress. In fact, that’s the status quo for many. And while we are not literally dying from it, our spiritual life is depleted; our relationships are strained; our friendships are flagging; and our health is on the wane. Fortunately, God has a cure for those of us feeling overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed. It’s called “Sabbath.“ Let’s explore how Jesus teaches us his rhythm of rest!

In today's fast-paced world, the temptation to rush and hurry seems ever-present. We are constantly bombarded with deadlines, responsibilities, and expectations that demand our immediate attention. It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that the more we accomplish in less time, the more successful and fulfilled we will be. When we allow ourselves to be consumed by the frenzy of hurry, we inadvertently open the door to anxiety. We become so focused on the destination that we forget to appreciate the journey. Today, we will explore how hurry leads to anxiety and what the scripture teaches on how to address the epidemic of hurry.

It seems like all of us need more time. It seems like we never have enough margin in our schedules to accomplish all of the tasks at hand. It seems like our lives have gotten busier, more frantic, more frenetic, and less calm over the years. And perhaps you’ve noticed, the busier you are, the less time you actually spend with the people and activities that truly matter most. As one writer put it, “hurry is the great enemy of the soul.” So what would happen if we took a moment to pause and reflect on the pace and the rhythms of Jesus? He didn’t seem to be in a hurry. He never seemed to be in a rush. What would it look like if we learned to follow him at the pace he moved through the world: calm, rested, present. What would our lives look like if we followed his schedule? What would it look like if we slowed down our pace long enough to learn the rhythms of Christ?

Two weeks ago, 313 children from small villages in Ghana chose members of One Family Church to be their sponsors. As a result of our sponsorship, the lives of these children and their families will be transformed forever through access to clean water, nutritious food, increased education, and much needed medicine. As followers of Jesus, we must always proclaim the gospel of Jesus both in word and in loving sacrificial service to those in need. What a joy, honor, and privilege for One Family Church to participate in this joyous proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ with our mouths, and also with our feet!
