When we look back over our lives, we see moments of God’s goodness and faithfulness. Ironically, sometimes those moments are situated in the middle of difficult circumstances. Sometimes when we look back, we see that God was faithful especially in moments where we did not see Him, feel Him, or experience Him. Christ always placed himself in the midst of those in need. After periods of prayer and solitude, he would head straight into crowds of people who were physically sick, emotionally broken, and spiritually depleted. Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, he brought healing, comfort, and hope. And he calls us to do the same. He calls us to be filled with the power of his Spirit, and then to plunge into the areas of our culture’s greatest pain and deepest need. He calls us to bring healing, comfort, and hope in the midst of sorrow, desperation, and despair.

Jesus was demanding. He challenged his followers to “take up their cross.” He commanded his followers to “obey his words.” He directed his followers to serve and sacrifice. He was a demanding leader. But he never asked his followers to do anything that he wasn’t willing to do himself. This week, we explore the challenge that Jesus issues to his followers -- a challenge to see, serve, and sacrifice for those in need. In fact, in a powerful twist, he pointed out that only by serving the most vulnerable people around us can we truly serve him.

Sometimes it feels like we’ve been marked for life. An especially difficult or traumatic experience like betrayal, divorce, or loss of a loved one can leave an indelible mark on our heart and mind. Other times, something that we did, an action we took or failed to take, leaves a lasting mark on our life and possibly even our reputation. When we meet a woman named Rahab in the Bible, we meet a woman who was marked for life. She was known by everyone as a “prostitute.” That was her reputation, vocation, and identity. But one day, Rahab received a different kind of mark. She was told to put a scarlet cord on the window of her home. The cord would mark her as someone to save when the Israelites attacked her hometown of Jericho. The mark would ensure that she remained alive -- in a new and surprising way, she was “marked for life.” Take a moment to listen to this powerful and inspiring sermon about how you too can be marked by God -- marked for life.

MARKED FOR LIFE

JOSHUA 2:17-18 NIV

[God] placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.

The blood on the houses where you are staying will be a distinguishing mark for you; when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No plague will be among you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

If you’re reading this, you probably want to experience more of what God has for you. If you’re still reading this, you probably want to grow into the person God made you to be. You want to experience the peace and power of God in your life. You want to experience the joy and the fulfillment of a life aligned with God’s purpose. You want to live into your full potential in Christ. However, you keep coming up against obstacles and barriers that impede your progress. Some of the barriers are from the outside, others are from within. In the Book of Joshua, we meet the Israelites who have been wandering in the wilderness for forty years. While they long to step into the promised land, a land flowing with the blessings of God, they keep coming up against a barrier to entry known as the Jordan River. For forty years, they haven't been able to cross into their destiny, because they’ve been blocked by external circumstances and internal fears. How did they (and how do we) break through the barriers to entry, and experience the fullness of God’s promises and purposes for his people? How do we experience the promised land today?

All of us wrestle with self doubt and self-sabotaging beliefs from time to time. Especially in times of stress, we may embrace a self-defeating perspective, and doubt our own value, worth, effectiveness, and ability. When Moses met God at the burning bush, God called him to accomplish the greatest mission imaginable to him: the liberation of his people from slavery. But Moses was filled with self-doubt and self sabotaging beliefs. Fortunately, God was patient with Moses, and gently reminded him that Moses would not have to rely upon his own strength, but would be aided by the power and the presence of God. What self-defeating beliefs do you need to replace today with the truth that God is with you, for you, and in you?

You cannot face your future if you are focused on your past. Many of us struggle with our past in one of two ways: regret or resentment. We often look back on things we’ve done or said with regret, wishing we could change them, wishing we had done things differently, and regretting that there’s nothing we can do about our past mistakes. Or we look back at our past with resentment, harboring anger and bitterness towards others for the hurtful things they’ve done or said to us. Either way, we can get stuck in the present because we’re still holding on to pain from the past. When we look at the life of Joseph, we see a young man who was betrayed by friends, colleagues, and even his own flesh and blood. If anyone had a right to feel resentment, it was Joseph. We also see a young man who made some foolish mistakes in his youth, mistakes that could easily have overcome him with regret. But most importantly, when we look at the life of Joseph, we see a man who made peace with his past, and in doing so, was able to thrive in the present, and prepare for the future. How might your life change for the better today if you were able to make peace with your past?

All of us want to live a life that matters. We want our lives to count. We want to live lives of meaning, not just mediocrity. We don’t want lives of “quiet desperation” -- we want lives of destiny and purpose. But we don’t always know how to pursue a life like that. The task seems daunting and overwhelming.
