The Apostle Paul was a church planter. On his second missionary journey, the Holy Spirit called him to plant a church in a city called Philippi. Paul loved this church, and they loved him back. They faithfully supported him and his mission work throughout his life. Ten years after planting the church, he wrote them a letter. The letter is filled with love and affection for the congregation. In the opening of the letter, the Apostle Paul offers a prayer for the church. He prays that they would continue to grow in love, wisdom, and righteousness. That prayer is the prayer of every faithful pastor for the congregation they lead. Join us today as Pastor Brent preaches a powerful sermon called, “My Prayer for You.”

As we celebrate the 12-year anniversary of One Family Church, it is a good time to stop and ask, “Who is the Church?” What does it mean to be the Church? Today, we explore the answer to that question from the scriptures. And we learn that we are not actually twelve years old. We’re actually 1990 years old. We’re a part of what God has been doing around the globe for two millenia! We are God’s delight. We are God’s dwelling place. We are God’s body. And we are God’s party waiting to happen! Today, let’s remember who we are!

It’s easy for us to love those who love us. It’s more difficult to love those we don’t know. But it’s almost impossible to love those who actively oppose us. In Jesus’ famous parable of the good Samaritan, he calls us to an expanded vision of love. He calls us to those who love us and those who hate us; those who support us, and those who oppose us; those who help us, and those who harm us. He calls us to love them all as ourselves. Who is God calling you to love today?

In one of the most beloved and famous events in Jesus’ ministry, he encountered a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. During this encounter, Jesus brilliantly addressed two types of sins: the sin of appetite, and the sin of authority. He challenged the self-righteousness of the religious leaders of his day, calling out their hypocrisy and judgmentalism. And he also compassionately called out the sin of the adulteress, instructing her to “go and sin no more.” As Christians, we are often tempted to condemn one of these types of sin, and condone the other type. But not so with Jesus. He neither condemned, nor condoned. Rather he compassionately called everyone to walk into his glorious light.

Most of our fears fall in one of three categories: 1) fear of death, 2) fear of rejection, and 3) fear of abandonment. When Jesus and his disciples were facing a storm in the sea of Galilee, Jesus asked a surprising question. He asked, “why are you so afraid?” The disciples must have been frustrated by the question, because the reason for their fear was obvious. They were at risk of drowning. But Jesus was getting at something much deeper. Jesus was teaching them, and us, that true faith overcomes all fear.

Of all the questions Jesus asked, one was more important than the rest. In a private conversation with his disciples, he asked them the following question: “Who do you say I am?” They may not have realized it at the time, but their response to that question would set the course of their eternity. Our answer to that question has massive implications in three fundamental aspects of our life: our deliverance, our direction, and our destiny. If Jesus were to sit down across from you today, and ask, “Who do you say I am?” how would you respond?

When Jesus encountered a man in Jerusalem who had been paralyzed for thirty eight years, he asked him an unexpected question. He asked, “Do you want to get well?” The question is surprising, because we generally expect that anyone who is sick wants to get well. But Jesus was probing the heart of the man to see whether he genuinely wanted to be made whole. Sometimes our sickness, weakness, bad habits, and sins can become our identity. Sometimes they can become the basis for our security. Sometimes, they become the excuses we rely on to avoid the harder work of living in wholeness. Perhaps there are some areas of weakness in your life today that God wants to strengthen -- some areas of sickness that God wants to make whole. Perhaps Jesus is asking you the question today he asked the man in Jerusalem: Do you want to get well?

When we face significant challenges, we’re often tempted to give up. The greater the challenge, the greater the temptation. Endurance doesn’t come easily. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote these words: “A man who endures trials is blessed, because when he passes the test, he will receive a crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” In other words, God promises to reward those who endure. What challenges are you facing today that are tempting you to give up? Where are you tempted to quit? Remember, the Holy Spirit is with you. He will sustain you and strengthen you. Don’t quit. Keep going. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the blessings of endurance. God’s got you. You can do this.
