It’s a VERSUS movie this week, which pin the vengeful ghosts from two of the most popular Japanese horrors of all time against each other for an all out battle over who has the wildest long black hair and who has the strongest curse. Minki recaps the premises of the originals before he and Tracy dive into the main event. Given this movie was created nearly two decades after the originals, we see how a curse can adapt in a newer digital age, but besides that, the movie was mainly a revival of our favorite parts of Ring/Ringu or Grudge/Ju-on. This is a pretty special episode. First, Tracy and Minki revel over the awesome fan videos that came in from the OFS tee-shirt contest (find them on our instagram and facebook feeds) and then Tracy gets stoked to talk about the first Lao female film director, Mattie Do, who just so happened to jump into the best genre of all...HORROR. This is her second film and the hosts enjoy retelling it, especially during Women In Horror Month. The movie separates itself from Japanese and Korean revenge horror, delivering a new angle to Asian ghost stories. Socioeconomic and cultural statements are made, giving us a little bit of insight into what its like in Laos, and you may be inspired to go play the lottery after watching it.

OH, HEY. It’s Women in Horror Month. Join the hosts for their first ever mini-sode, where they do something a little different just for this special month. They’ll discuss some of their favorite females who’ve impacted the genre, including screenwriters, producers, directors and memorable actresses. At the end, they run through the top 5 badass women leads in some of our favorite horror movies.

This week, Minki and Tracy realize that sometimes a horror movie is so bad, it’s good. Mental institution escapees stumbling upon a perfect set of soon-to-be victims, cheesy saxophone-based 80’s music, bad dubbing...this movie has it all. This Italian-American giallo film takes place in a theatre set, where all the actors get trapped inside after rehearsing. They slowly get “plucked” off, one by one, by one killer Owl dude. The hosts thank their fans, laugh at themselves and ponder over the portrayal of cops as bumbling donut eaters in horror films.

Sometimes you just don’t want to listen to an hour and 20 minutes of Tracy and Minki. They get it. So, they’ve decided to pick a short horror film to retell for this episode. Choosing a winner of an Australian Academy Award, this mini movie doesn’t disappoint, with its exploration of teen anguish and mental health as well as its well done creepy special effects to draw you into the characters nightmares—dreamed or real. Your hosts improv their way to finding deeper meaning behind this movie and Tracy asks Minki how his first stand-up comedy open mic night went.

So, maybe they grapple a bit about what happens first, next and last, but Minki and Tracy agree on one thing in this episode: this is a pretty great Spanish horror flick, full of surprising moments and anxiety-inducing scenes. Macarena Gómez, whose portrayal of a religious, agoraphobic seamstress and overly protective older sister, delivers emotions that are so believable that the hosts felt bad for her in moments of sadness and terrified of her in moments of bat-sh\_t craziness. Choosing a Shudder Exclusive for this “5th Anniversary episode” these two should probably change the name of the podcast to: “We Love Shudder.”

On all of the “top horror movie” lists of 2016, this week’s supernatural spookfest provokes the hosts to uncover what the deeper meaning behind the plot might be, just as the main characters try to uncover the cause of death of one puzzling and unidentified dead girl. With only enough jump scares to not put Minki off, solid acting and one old-timey song, this movie provides a creepy good story to retell.

What do you get when you mix three college age girls who have been drinking and smoking weed, a random game of scrabble, a vacant mansion on Christmas Eve and too many moral dilemmas? This movie. Listen to Minki and Tracy have fun retelling this movie as they both claim they didn’t have as much fun while watching it. Also, Minki talks about his vertigo and Tracy reads their first listener mail.

Tracy muses about why she became a horror fan after her first movie experience with Invasion of the Body Snatchers (‘78) as a young kid in the 80’s and then reminds Minki of all the scenes he forgot about from this week’s movie — a psychological thriller/buddy film about one guy’s journey through paranoia over an impending demonic invasion and his best friend’s quest for happiness. Loyalty and reality is questioned in the movie and whether this is a good movie or not is questioned in this episode. Special intro VO by Jeff Mathews.

Minki and Tracy clumsily dive headfirst into this first episode by retelling and loosely reviewing this semi-gory Korean Horror flick which balances between being a typical Asian Supernatural, complete with a creepy ghost girl exacting revenge, and a sequel to Saw as super smart high school students are being tested in order to save their classmates lives. We also find out that the name of this podcast was almost AMWF.
