  • Dr. Lewis Cantley Ph.D. Discusses Sugar and Cancer, Jill Lane and Supplements #925

We talk to Dr. Lewis Cantley today about the association between sugar and cancer. He discusses fascinating research on how sugar plays into the progression of some cancers. Initial findings show that a diet such as the Ketogenic Diet can slow the growth of some tumors. The sad part of the story is that funding is needed to conduct more research studies and most Big Pharma companies don't or won't cover the expense. Cantley believes tides are changing and more studies are coming. For now, if you have cancer, sugar should be avoided.

  • Dr. David Young, Von Eaglin, You're not special #920

Dr. David Young offers up some great advice on how we can be less reactive to our negative feelings. It's so important to practice noticing how we feel throughout the day. We can learn to accept how we're feeling, good or bad. And, we learn how to recognize negative feelings and make peace with them in a constructive manner. These practices can keep us from lashing out when we're upset. Feelings are our friends, negative and positive! Dr. Young is a clinical psychologist at UT Southwestern and the co-founder of Dallas Therapy Alliance.

Von Eaglin talks about how we've become a society of "specialness". We are all individuals with special talents and gifts. But, believing that we are more special or better than other people is a common problem. We are all human beings in this world and we all have different personalities. Learning that we are just like the next person is a challenge. We should stop comparing ourselves to others but focus on our own growth and goals. Learn more about Von here.

  • SPCA advice, Tips to keep your NY resolutions, Flipping the Script movie, top health trends for 2019 #918

We cover a lot on the first Friday of 2019! Maura Davies of the SPCA of North Texas hopes that everyone will consider adopting a pet this year. Davies says there are so many shelter pets available, everyone in America would have to adopt seven to give them all forever homes! If you do have pets, remember to spay and neuter them as well.

Cassie Bjork has some great tips and suggestions to keep your New Year's resolutions going strong all year long, For example, be specific in your goals and write them down on paper. Get rid of the junk food in your house and start fresh. Above all, plan for a setback or two and don't be too hard on yourself if you mess up. Bjork says it's best to be honest with yourself about what you feel you can accomplish.

The show takes a serious turn talking with Jeff Witzeman, writer, producer and director of the new film Flipping the Script, a documentary about the current state of cancer treatments for children. Flipping the Script explores the alarming turn some doctors are taking to mandate chemotherapy for children even in remission. However, some parents are fighting back. • Failure with Dr. Art Markman, Holistic addiction treatment with Robin Perry Braun

Failure is never fun, but how can we grow and learn from it? Dr. Art Markman talks with us about how failure in life is essential for growth. For example, how can we learn what we're good at or what we truly want to do without some trial and error? Climb a mountain, start a rock band, go for that management position for instance, but be prepared to possibly fail. The most successful people have dismal failures in life, but it's how they learn from them that eventually leads to success. Forget what you were taught in school - failing can be the best teacher in the school of life! Check out Dr. Markman's books to help in work, life and home here.

Robin Perry Braun talks about the flawed addiction treatment system and what changes need to be made to have a higher success rate for addiction recovery. Our discussion leads into the underlying causes of addiction. Braun believes that the majority of us were not allowed to express emotion as children. As a result, we turn to outside influences to make us feel good. For instance, we become addicted to alcohol, shopping, food or sex, just to name a few. We can learn to express our feelings and emotions at an early age and stop the cycle. This is an important subject that we'll expand upon in the coming months.

  • AFM and Vaccines with Mary Holland, Car Accident Prevention #916

We are back from the holiday and ready for a great year on One Life Radio! Our first show for the year is full of important information. Mary Holland, Director of the Graduate Legal Skills Program at NYU, updates us on the state of vaccines in the U.S. and how they may be tied to the recent outbreak of Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). With 186 confirmed cases, children with AFM is on the rise. You may have heard of AFM as the "polio-like" disease, affecting mostly children. The illness affects the nervous system and causes the muscles to become weak, similar to symptoms found in Polio cases. We discuss possible ties to the increase in AFM cases and the increased number of vaccines recommended by the Center of Disease Control (CDC).

We also talk about the potential dangers of the HPV vaccine. Holland and her colleagues uncovered information regarding the initial clinical trials for the HPV vaccine Gardasil, developed by Merck Pharmaceuticals. What they uncover is truly alarming. Holland believes that all parents should educate themselves about the pros and cons of this vaccine.

Daniel Tague talks car accident prevention in the last segment. The first tip and most important is to pay attention! Too many drivers are on their phones, eating, putting make-up on and more. Your car is a weapon and we need to treat it that way. Pay attention on the road! Listen to the show for all the tips from Daniel and some interesting statistics on accidents in the U.S.
