Emerging evidence is coming out which associates chronic sleep deprivation with negative impairments to the immune system, decreased cognitive function and may even lead to an earlier death. • Nov 8th 2017 – Intermittent Fasting – Power Lifting – Keto - One Life Radio Podcast
Ryan Lowery talks about intermittent fasting and how manipulating our mitochondrial networks may be the key to increasing our lifespan.

"The study, published Oct. 26 online in Cell Metabolism, sheds light on the basic biology involved in cells’ declining ability to process energy over time, which leads to aging and age-related disease, and how interventions such as periods of fasting might promote healthy aging.

Mitochondria the energy-producing structures in cells exist in networks that dynamically change shape according to energy demand. Their capacity to do so declines with age, but the impact this has on metabolism and cellular function was previously unclear. In this study, the researchers showed a causal link between dynamic changes in the shapes of mitochondrial networks and longevity."

Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound found in "Magic Mushrooms”, can psilocybin actually be used to treat depression? Shawn Wells talks "Magic Mushrooms" and their medicinal benefits. Psilocybin has long been used for not only religious and spiritual but also health reasons.  Recent studies are now finding that psilocybin may be an effective method for treating those suffering from disorders such as depression and anxiety.

    * What is Psilocybin?
    * What are the health benefits of Psilocybin?
    * Is there research out there on Psilocybin and depression?
    * Do you think that treating depression with Psilocybin will become a common practice as more research comes out?

It is hard to say since it is still classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in the United States.  If you are familiar with the famous neuroscientist Sam Harris, he talks about the war on drugs.  A mistake was made long ago when psychedelic drugs like psilocybin were termed "drugs" and put into the same category as drugs like cocaine and crystal meth.  This has given these compounds a negative association despite all of the health benefits that can be associated with them.  This is the same reason why not everyone has bought into the medical marijuana idea.  We will not be able to consider these substances as common therapeutic approaches until we can think intuitively about them and recognize their therapeutic potential and lower risk of developing addiction.

    * There are some risks though, correct?

Correct.  Some people can have "bad trips", some people can take too much and get sick, and there's the concern of your source for it not being legitimate and getting something in your system that is not safe.  Overall though, the risks are not even close to the schedule 1 drugs like cocaine, meth, and heroine.  But steroids are put in that same category as well and the risks with those are not anywhere near as perilous either.  What you can see is that there's a business of enforcement around these "drugs" and there's pharmaceuticals from the medical industry that would be greatly threatened by them not being illegal.

  • Oct 31st 2017 – Heart Health – The Biology of Belief - One Life Radio Podcast
    Heart Health

How healthy is your heart? Heart disease is something you can treat and prevent with diet alone. Dr. Jack Wolfson discusses his book The Paleo Cardiologist and gives us a step by step guide to heart health.
    Biology of Belief
Is there science behind belief? Robin Perry Braun gives us the biology behind belief.

The function of the mind is to create coherence between your beliefs and reality. A stimulus hits the cell, the proteins reaction depends on the perception or interpretation.

The subconscious is 95% of the brain and the conscious is 5% The sub has a million times the impulses per minute than the conscious. So we are led and controlled by our subconscious. The 5% is our wishes and aspirations but it doesn’t really control the rest.. Our life is dictated by our sub beliefs.

The mind interprets the signals and the interpretation causes a variety of chemicals and hormones to be released in the body – this dictates what the body does even to a cellular level. The blood and all fluids in the body are controlled by the hormones and chemicals released – the subconscious mind controls this release.

These beliefs are formed by inheritance, absorption and what we experience. Energy medicine says the same thing.

  • Oct 30th 2017 – DNA Testing – Sugar – Probiotics - One Life Radio Podcast
Does exercise and nutrition trump DNA? Join us as we talk with Dr. Brad Dieter about "Nutrigenomics: What Can Your DNA Really Tell You About Your Nutrition And Training Needs?"

What exactly is nutrigenomics? Dr. Dieter simplifies it as a branch of nutrition genomics that takes your DNA and then doctors will then tell you what you can and cannot eat.

Here's what Dr. Dieter wants us to know...

It Isn’t All About the Genome
To fully understand how one’s genome can impact things like nutrition, performance, and recovery, one needs to be aware of the fact that the genome does not operate in isolation. For decades we have be given a crude analogy that the genome is a blueprint and conveys all the information needed and that one gene equals one protein.

We are just beginning to scratch the surface of the regulatory mechanisms and we are finding that the genome is one piece, albeit an important piece, in a multilayer system that turns underlying digital information (i.e. the genome) into the complex organism that is a human.

Jill Lane discusses if we should really be blaming sugar intake for all of our chronic health problems.

Here are a few questions we ask:

    * We've had many guests on One Life over the years that talk about he negative effects of sugar on our health...are you saying they are wrong?
    *  If we aren't obsessing about sugar as you mentioned, what should we do instead to get and stay well?
    * Why is this approach better then tackling sugar intake head-on right out of the gate?
    * (If it doesn't come up during the questions above) What about our kids and sugar?
