  • Sept 15th – Spay N Neuter – PURE Study – Mindful Meditation - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Maura Davies from the North Texas SPCA and Jacob Carty from the Spay N Neuter Network about spaying and neutering our animals, we talk with Dr. Mike Fenster about the PURE Study, and we talk about mindful meditation with Autumn Warren.

Maura Davies, VP of communications for the North Texas SPCA talks about the importance of getting our animals fixed. There are thousands of animals on the street, the first step to getting them off is to spay and neuter our very own.

Jacob Carty talks more about the Spay N Neuter Network. Find your Spay N Neuter Network location here, and read more about their affordable services!

Dr. Mike Fenster, author of "The Fallacy of The Calorie: Why The Modern Western Diet is Killing Us and How to Stop It", talks about the findings in the PURE Study. Here is an excerpt from his post on Psychology Today:

“Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the USDA treated fat as the primary harm in the American diet,” according to Marion Nestle, Ph.D., former chair of the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University. It was an undertaking many researchers feel was never grounded in science.

At the time the guidelines were issued in 1977, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) had tested the proposed dietary fat sanctions; limits of 30 percent total fat and 10 percent saturated fat. The dietary fat restrictions were based on six dietary trials, five of them secondary prevention, consisting of a grand total of 2,467 males. The implementation immediately impacted 220 million Americans and 56 million in the UK, all based on at best specious reasoning from less than 2,500, mostly unhealthy, middle-aged Caucasian men."

Autumn Warren, creator of Ether Elixir, talks about mindful meditation and ways to destress in a busy world. Autumn suggests taking a set time out of the day every day dedicated to meditation. We must have an urgency for this set aside time to quiet our mind. Breathing exercises are an excellent way to get started!

  • Sept 14th 2017 – Gifts of Imperfection – Dr. Nandi - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Dr. Partha Nandi about his new book "Ask Dr. Nandi: 5 Steps to Becoming Your Own #HealthHero for Longevity, Well-Being, and a Joyful Life", and we talk September Book Club Selection with Kip Watson.

Leading Physician Dr. Partha Nandi MD, FACP reveals in his debut book that your health is NOT PRE-DETERMINED. In a world where everyone is extremely concerned about their health and well-being, Dr. Nandi stresses to his followers that you are NOT your genes and your health fate is NOT sealed at any age.

Dr. Partha Nandi talks more about his book "Ask Dr. Nandi: 5 Steps to Becoming Your Own #HealthHero for Longevity, Well-Being, and a Joyful Life".

“A #HealthHero means being an advocate for yourself and your family, in sickness and in health. It’s about building the confidence to gain knowledge and use that knowledge to make tough decisions. I’m giving readers the necessary tools to become empowered and take ownership of his or her health choices. Whether addressing bullying or prostate cancer, community and purpose or fitness and nutrition, I am tackling tough questions, stimulating conversations, creating a new awareness of options and resources, and guiding readers to confidently make the choices that are best for them.” - Dr. Partha Nandi.

Kip Watson talks about her September Book Club selection "The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are by Dr. Brenet Brown".

"Practicing courage, compassion, and connection in our daily lives is how we cultivate worthiness. The key word is practice. Mary Daly, a theologian, writes, “Courage is like—it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: You get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.” The same is true for compassion and connection. We invite compassion into our lives when we act compassionately toward ourselves and others, and we feel connected in our lives when we reach out and connect."

  • Sept 13th 2017 – Ecosystem Restoration – Resistance Training – Pep Talks at Work - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Judy Schwartz about ecosystem restoration, and Daniel Tague teaches us some resistance training techniques.

Judy Schwartz, author of "Water in Plain Sight: Hope for a Thirsty World", goes into the depths of ecosystem restoration and our responsibilities to Mother Nature.

Schwartz believes the following in regard to water and ecosystem restoration: "We often think of water as a “noun”, as something bounded by place. After researching and writing a book on water, however, I’ve come to regard water as a “verb”. Water is always in motion. It expands in volume or retrenches and it retains or releases energy. Water also changes state, moving from gas to liquid to solid and back again, in an ongoing dialogue with land and sun.

This is not just to fuss over language. Rather, I believe that understanding how water “works”—how it moves across the landscape and through the atmosphere—is essential to truly address our many water challenges whether we’re contending with scarcity, in the case of drought, or too much water, as in floods. We can better grapple with other significant global problems by zeroing in on water processes."

You can find her book here.
    Resistance Training
Next, Daniel Tague talks about resistance training and how to keep your workouts aligned with your fitness goals.

    1. What are the 5 variables of resistance training?
         a. Technique
         i. Goal, alignment, positioning, motion, stabilization, breathing and tempo
         b. Intensity
         i. The amount of load or resistance being moved
         c. Volume
         i. Total time muscle is under tension (set, routine, day, week, month etc.)
ii. Can be changed by tempo and load
          d. Recovery
         i. Time is needed for muscles to recover within the routine or before the next time you lift
        e. Sequence
        i. The order of the exercises based on the goals you want to attain

  • Sept 12th 2017 – Sugar and your Brain – Power of Words - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Dr. David Foreman about sugar and the brain, and we talk with Robin Perry Braun about the power of words and positive thoughts.

The Herbal Pharmacist, Dr. David Foreman says most people gravitate to sugar and sugary drinks at times during the day when they feel they need to stay mentally focused or energized, but he says there are other ways we can drive energy to the brain that doesn’t shock it with sugar.  Because our brain uses about 20 percent of our body’s energy, Foreman says we need to feed it the right nutrients at the right times to maintain focus, concentration and memory throughout the day and also for long-term brain health.

Here are a few questions Dr. David Foreman answers:

    1. We know sugar is bad but how bad is it for our brain? What are the latest studies showing?

    2. Are diet drinks a good substitute for sugary drinks? Why are they more dangerous to our health?

    3. Why do you think we gravitate to sugar? How can we break that cycle?

    4. What are your A-B-C-D’s when it comes to feeding the brain good nutrients?

    5. Why is it important to relax the brain? What ways can we help the brain to recharge?

    6. At what age should we start thinking about brain health? How it affects our overall health?

Robin Perry Braun talks about the power of words, intentions and thoughts.

    * How can you explain that there is power in words both spoken and unspoken?

Quantum Physics shows us that words, thoughts and intentions give off energy and that has an effect

    * Dr. Emotos water and rice experiments
    * High Frequency vs low frequency energy, positive vs negative
    * Case studies of the impact of words

    2. What is the effect of negative thoughts, words and intentions

    * Disease in an individual – many studies and science to confirm this and even the AMA agrees
    * Negative programming which affects the identity
    * Depression, anxiety etc.

On a corporate level, like attracts like – when we sow negativity like hate, disunity, attack, slander, judgement of character, we attract back destruction and negative results

When we sow love, peace, understanding, empathy, we attract good and positive things.

We do the negative on autopilot and we take no responsibility or make any connections to the power it has on our lives but QP proves that we create our own lives by what we attract and it is the law of reciprocity and expansion (what we focus on we give energy to and it expands)

Would you be more careful about your words, thoughts and intentions if you had the belief that they really mattered both individually and corporately?

  • Sept 11th 2017 – Body Image – Diet and Depression - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Dr. Mike McFarland about body image, and we talk with Ryan Lowery about diet and depression.

Dr. Mike McFarland discusses the relationship between exercise and body image. Here are some questions Dr. Mike McFarland answers:

It’s no secret that many women in America are unhappy with their bodies. What does research tell us about this?
So what do we know about how exercise affects our body image? In other words, how important is exercise to achieving satisfaction with our bodies?

"Beginning in the early 1990s investigations into the body image concerns of men have increased, and this study adds to extant research by examining correlates of more general body dissatisfaction (BD) and symptoms of muscle dysmorphia (MD) in particular. Three hundred four undergraduate men completed a broad-based symptom inventory, a self-concept questionnaire, and an instrument that assessed problematic body image, eating, and exercise patterns as well as specific symptoms of MD. Multiple regression analyses suggest that lower ratings of overall self-concept and higher levels of depression, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity are predictive of body image concerns in men. Furthermore, these variables accounted for almost twice the variance in general BD than they did for specific symptoms of MD. In addition, anorexic and bulimic behaviors, obsessive–compulsive symptoms, and risk factors for interpersonal problems were also associated with symptoms of MD, even when BD was controlled."

  • Sept 8th 2017 – PURE Study – Aspartame – Feeding Your Brain - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Maura Davies about Hurricane Harvey and animal displacement, we talk with Dr. Mike Fenster about the PURE study, we talk with Dr. Gabe Mirkin about aspartame, and we talk with Autumn Warren about how to feed the brain in your belly.

Maura Davies, VP of Communications at the North Texas SPCA talks about how the SPCA and many other groups are coming together to help the animals.

Here are a few questions she answers:

    * What has it been like seeing all the destruction?
    * Why would any pet owner leave a pet chained up outside?
    * How many pets have been rescued?
    * How can we help/where is the biggest need right now?

Dr. Mike Fenster talks about the PURE Study and the results of a high fat diet.

Here is a summary of the results:

A new study, The PURE Study, examined ~ 135,000 people from 18 countries for 7 years, and showed as I wrote about in The Fallacy of The Calorie (and touch upon in my upcoming book, Food Shaman: The Art of Quantum Food) that high fat intake (33% reduction in early mortality)—including saturated fat (24% reduction in early mortality)—was associated with a reduced risk of early mortality.

The researchers also found that high carbohydrate intake was associated with an increased risk of mortality, although the data do not discriminate between processed and unprocessed carbohydrates.

PURE co–lead author Dr Mahshid Dehghan (McMaster University) said: "The upper levels of saturated fat intake in our study (mean 10%–13% of dietary energy) was associated with a significantly reduced mortality compared with low levels of saturated fat, and very low saturated-fat intake appears harmful. Current guidelines that recommend total fat below 30% and saturated fat below 10% of energy intake are not supported by our data.”

Just a few weeks ago, the American Heart Association issued a new "advisory" recommending minimizing intake of saturated fat and replacing it with polyunsaturated fat or carbohydrate. The PURE findings appear to be in direct contradiction to this advice.

    Imagine that...vindication tastes delicious!

Dr. Gabe Mirkin talks about the dangers of aspartame. Here are his notes.

Aspartame and saccharin continue to be blamed for a wide variety of ills, even though research has shown them to be safe if eaten in reasonable amounts.

Aspartame, marketed as Nutrasweet, has been the target of an intense negative internet campaign claiming that it causes many diseases, including lupus and multiple sclerosis. However, researchers on these diseases discount any connection.

John Olney, a respected scientist at Washington University in St. Louis, feels that aspartame causes brain tumors, but there is no solid data (2). He reported that the incidence of brain tumors has increased from 1975 to 1992 (4), when aspartame was first introduced, but a report in the Journal of the National Cancer institute found no increase in brain tumors.

Aspartame breaks down into two chemicals, formaldehyde and phenyalanine. Formaldehyde is a known cancer-causing agent. One study from Spain shows that breakdown products of formaldehyde accumulate in the body (3), but most studies find formaldehyde in the test tube and are unable to find it in living tissue. Most studies show no effect on IQ or personality (1).

  • Sept 5th 2017 – Prostate Cancer – Dealing with Loss - One Life Radio Podcast
Today we talk with Dr. David Foreman about prostate cancer, and we talk with Robin Perry Braun about dealing with loss.

Dr. David Foreman, also known as "The Herbal Pharmacist", talks about prostate cancer. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month and a majority of men over the age of 40 deal with some pretty uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms brought on by prostate related issues, even if they do not have prostate cancer.

Women, especially, should listen up, as most men will not talk about this health issue that could be at the root of relationship discontent. David Foreman, RPh, known to audiences as The Herbal Pharmacist, says understanding what a man is going through is half the battle, and discovering some ways to help support him can be truly beneficial to improving romantic relations.

Foreman says peace of mind is most important to men who are managing the symptoms associated with BPH or prostatitis and there are actually quite a few plants in herbal medicine that can make a life changing difference. He says these exotic herbs have been around for centuries, used by royalty and natives and may even be growing in your backyard!  An estimated one-third of American men with prostate cancer use at least one form of complementary medicine therapy, including herbs and supplements.

Robin Perry Braun talks about the emotional dynamics of having a loved one with cancer. Here are a few questions she answers:

    * Why is cancer so devastating”
    i. Cancer is becoming epidemic in US and lies in our subconscious as a deep fear.  The latest statistic is that 50 % of all americans will get some form of cancer in their lifetime.
ii. It is scary for the patient because of the horror stories of pain and suffering with or without chemo or radiation.
iii. The unknown factors are very large
iv. People put their faith in what the doctors say
    * What are some of the overwhelming factors for the loved ones and caretakers?
    i. They watch the vibrant and energetic person lose weight and waste away – lose hair get sick etc with chemo
ii. They live in fear of the potential pain they may suffer and not know what level of caretaking they have to offer.
iii. It drags out or it doesn’t but no one knows.
iv. The caretakers stay in survival mode and can suffer PTSD after death because they had to suspend all their own emotions and needs to care for the sick person.
    v. Often even after death it takes the caretaker a while to let down because of stahing hypervigilant.
vi. It affects the family dynamic often in leaving very difficult dynamics.
vii. The costs could have been devastating and not able to recover.

Overall, the helpless feeling is very difficult to stay in this state. The patient has time to plan for the loss – this has an upside and a downside. The upside is that they have time to make amends and heal rifts and conflicts and settle wills and inheritances etc. The downside is that everyone has to live knowing what they believe is an inevitable outcome.
    3. Is there a right way to grieve?
    i. No, don’t judge – everyone grieves as they are able to grieve and often this is delayed.
ii. Give people time, watching someone not only die but become someone different due to disease is an emotional trauma.
iii. Allow the feelings and emotions a place to be expressed and be a shoulder for those most affected by the loss.

Dr. Mike Fenster talks about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet.

He sites a study finding those consuming a Mediterranean-style diet had significantly decreased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of generalized inflammation.  CRP is also associated with such inflammatory conditions as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many other disabilities and diseases. All of these can be linked with the consumptive patterns of today's modern society. The researchers also found that participants with osteoporosis following the diet had a lower rate of bone loss than those not following the diet.
