  • Interview with Amelia Felbinger

After seeing Amelia speak on a virtual stage, I invited her to join me here. She’s a speaker, actor, entrepreneur, and mom of two. She created the Be Happy Business as a way of infusing more happiness into all aspects of life.

Here, we talk about mindset and personal development through the eyes of an actor. The closing line of her speech was, “It doesn’t get more real than what an actor does.”

    Fascinating, right?

Key points you’ll get from this interview:

    • Life unfolds much differently from what you plan
    • You must engage in personal development because your business will only grow as much as you do.
    • An actor receives a story and then asks different questions to create the character that the story demands. You can do the same in your life. “We need to practice differently and not just accept the default.”
    • Actors create a moment that changes that moment.
    • Actors problem solve differently because their relationship with time is different.
    • Find your energy, wield that energy, and fine-tune that energy. Amelia notes, “We’re always fine-tuning the stories in rehearsal.” She goes on, speaking about personal growth, “We’re often rehearsing unhelpful stories.”
    • Changing the questions you ask will change the stories you have and the results you get. The answer is in the question.
    • Humans thrive on being in discovery.

She has a couple of great concepts around De-adulting, noting that actors play!

Being in a playful state is where creativity lies.

  • The Person and Their Behavior

Many parents have felt like selling their kids to the circus or letting the neighbors take care of them for a few minutes, days, or months.

Many employers have felt like pushing the ejector-seat button at meetings and having the “bad” employee launched into space. Somewhere else… anywhere but here.

Neither of those are the “correct” solution to “bad” behavior.

It’s important to remember that the person is not their behavior. You can love a person and not like their behavior.

And that’s the conversation to have - “What you’re doing right now isn’t what’s needed. The behavior you’re showing needs to stop.”

That’s so different from, “why are you being such a brat (or the other b-word)?”

Get the perspective that they’re not doing this TO you. The behavior is coming out as a sign of pain and they need acknowledgment and even to be contained. At work, “this behavior isn’t appropriate” is an okay thing to say.

HR Note: People are moved out of work engagements because their behavior isn’t appropriate. (You can document behavior; you can’t document “a bad attitude.”)

And if it’s you that’s having an “off” day, take note of that too. You can still love yourself and your life and not love that you’re feeling irritable because you ate the wrong thing or slept badly or have some other ache or pain.

    • Change your perspective to notice that the person who is exhibiting the “bad” behavior isn’t a bad person.
    • Find a place of compassion, recognizing that the other person might be in pain.
    • Ask yourself what that person really needs at this moment.
    • And remember these steps work for you when you’re having an “off” day.

  • Interview with Zahara Joy

Finding the entrepreneurial spirit as a young girl, selling a home-made kite for $3.67, Zahara Joy has gone on to recreate herself living in more countries than most of us visit in our lifetimes.

She worked in high-fashion in New York, moved to Italy, and realized that her calling was to help women live a lifestyle that’s above average.

Having lost everything, Zahara’s perspective is that everything that looks like a disaster can be a blessing. She notes that there are two types of people: those who are average and those who go for it. She sees herself as a role model of the latter and encourages others to do the same.

Zahara coaches women who fear becoming their true selves as she enables them through a holistic approach to what success really is.

Though Z coaches women, this is a MUST LISTEN, even if you’re a guy!

Zahara talks about that “second of doubt” where everything is on the line. It’s a defining moment where you could stunt your own success path or move through it.

Zahara founded The Legendary Woman Society to focus on Mindset and Relationships.

  • Interview with Kate MacKinnon

    Spiritually bankrupt to fit.

Kate MacKinnon, Former VP of JPMorgan Chase, also ran her own management tech company before answering her calling to help women to step into their power and greatness.

Now, as a certified Feng Shui practitioner, Kate creates spaces of elegance and beauty that transform lives.

Kate describes her journey from Artist to inadvertent feminist to becoming a coach and guide for women as well as becoming a certified Feng Shui practitioner.

In this episode, I pronounced Feng Shui incorrectly until the end (it’s Fung Schway, by the way).

    Important points:

    •     Use mentors and guides!
    •     Listen to yourself and trust that inner knowingness.
    •     If you drink to drown your feelings, you might find out they can swim anyway.
    •     Our space reflects who we are.
    •     Space is space, whether that’s your desk, room, office, or home. Take a look at your environment.
    •     Clutter blocks energy flow. Things have energy and can block us from what we really want.

Create a way of being with your stuff.

    •     Again, listen to yourself.
    •     Do everything with intention.

  • Interview with David Chametzky

I met our guest, David Chemetzky, on the road to the TEDx stage. Through masks and over meals, we got to know each other and his message of rising up from the ashes speaks to us all. Dave has been through divorce and found his way back from what could have been a truly self-destructive path.

Now he offers us his P.A.T.H – a formula standing for Personal Attitudes Towards Happiness.

Dave shares his stories of rebound and how he came to the term Cluberty™ to define the transition people go through on the way to getting a bigger clue about their lives.  Our past doesn’t define our present or future. We get to!

David is the founder of Peace, Love, and Bring a Bat – it’s his way of saying that you can find your passion AND take a stand for something.

He can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

He’s offering a free copy of his interview in Success Profiles magazine where he gives tips on finding your passion and standing up for what you believe.  He believes in the power of proximity, being around the right people, and he invites you to reach out!

  • Love Letters

Whether you’re in a relationship with someone or you’re a single who’s just getting through your day, every day, there’s one person who needs you a little more right now.

Personal growth is so important and how you treat yourself determines how you grow. And remember, if you’re not growing, you’re backsliding.

Who needs you the most right now? YOU!

What do you say to yourself when you step on a scale or see yourself in a mirror? What do you think when you get in your car or pay your bills? What language happens in your thought bubbles when you go to work? What are you thinking when you meet up with someone else?

Don’t say anything to yourself about yourself that you wouldn’t say to someone else about them. You’d never tell someone else that they’re too fat, too wrinkly, not smart enough, not wealthy enough… not enough.

What would you tell someone who is working on coming out of a hard time?

The fact is that you’re coming through a tough transition right now.

    You Need You

    Inspire Greatness in Yourself

Personal growth happens every day. It takes your intentionality and focus.

Investing in growing yourself pays off big time in your business and relationships. And again, the first relationship is with yourself.

What kind of thing can you remind yourself about today?

You ARE enough. And… every day, you’re getting a little bit better!

Be intentional and invest in yourself.

  • Interview with Lt. Col. (ret) Scott Mann

I had the pleasure and honor of interviewing my friend, a former Green Beret and retired Lt. Col., Scott Mann.

Today we spoke about Trust and his program of Rooftop Leadership. How do you lead during times of low trust? People don’t trust political leaders, but worse, people don’t even seem to trust each other.

    • Defend RIGHT, even when no one follows
    • Make a true Human Connection
      • Leadership is based on relationships (You’ve heard that from corporate leaders I’ve interviewed here at One Sharp Sword)
        • Human connection is the primary commodity
    • Primal fears lead to insular grouping
      • We can build a deep bonding trust which only serves an immediate group OR we can BUILD WHAT’S CALLED BRIDGING TRUST, which serves to create greater unity.
    • Each individual can be both an individual and a part of a greater community and it’s up to each one of us to stand up and do the right thing, bridging beyond the comfort of our own group.

    That’s Leadership.

Scott Mann, his books, and trainings can be found at RooftopLeadership.com

  • The Key To Mindset
    • Your mindset is based on what you repeat every day.
    • Sometimes that’s subconscious
      • That means, your work is to really look at where you’re slowing down, distracted, or outright resisting taking that next step.
    • Step into loving your day.
      • Create a new meaning. There’s no judgment of something until you give it judgment.
    • Practice creating positive judgment and giving a new meaning to the things in your life… ALL of the things in your life.
    • The key to mindset is as simple as deciding what mindset you want.
      • WHATTTTT???  Yep!!! The key to mindset is as simple as deciding on the mindset you want to have about something.
    • What will you make of this moment, day, week, month, quarter, and year?
      • You decide!

  • Keeping Your Focus
    • It’s easy to lose track of where you said you wanted to go.
      • There are a lot of distractions out there and sometimes they’re meant to confuse you to the point of stopping you

    • Get CLEAR, super-clear on what you want
      • Use a Vision Board to keep your clear goals in front of you
    • Think Big
    • Break Your Goals Into Action Steps
    • List Your Top Three Steps for your Top Three Goals
    • Take Action On The First Step

  • The TRUTH About Optimism
    • I’m annoyingly perky. There’s an old joke about a kid who is romping around in a room full of horse manure, and someone stops her to find out why she’s so happy. Her reply is that “with all this poop, there must be a pony in here somewhere!”
    • Think about the meaning you give to any situation… ANY situation. I just lost a dear friend, someone I thought of as a sister. And, as part of my grieving her loss, I found a way to celebrate two things: 1.) All the amazing times we had and the wonderful encouragement we gave each other, and 2.) her passing reminded me that I actually MUST get my message out. Also, the not so subtle reminder to share your love with others.
      • The point here is that I could choose to be devastated or I could choose to be uplifted. I have been enriched by my friend. I will miss her dearly. And I choose to focus on the good she brought to all she touched.
    • Optimism is a reflexive, learned skill - you have to practice it to make it a part of you.
      • In any situation, ask yourself, what’s the lesson and what’s the good that can come from this.
    • The truth about optimism is that it’s a choice you make every moment of every day!
