  • Three Resources You're Managing Badly

One Sharp Sword - Cutting Through To What Matters Most with Dr Wayne Pernell is meant to be thought-provoking and inspiring.

This show offers no advice or counsel related to law, finance, or health (either physical or mental).  You are listening at your own discretion and interpreting what you hear in your own way.  This show is meant for entertainment purposes and no claims of enhancement or enrichment of any sort are indicated or implied.  Nope, this show doesn’t promise to make you better looking.  But hey… look at you now!  Listen in!  Enjoy!

Most leaders like to think they have everything under control and when they don’t, they pull in the reins, tightening the control, which often leads to more out-of-control-ness.

The three resources you’re managing badly are these:

    1. Your time!
      1. You’re treating the calendar page like it’s a bad thing and you look at the clock like it’s a threat.
      2. We all have 24-hours in a day
      3. Manage your projects, not your time.  Treat everything from emails to meetings like projects.  Give them time slots.  Give your projects time slots for you to hunker down and focus exclusively on them.
    2. Your money!
      1. You may or may not be tracking cash flow.  You might be misestimating what you need.
        1. Look at your projects
        2. Look at what each might require
        3. Look at your past production
        4. And again it’s back to project management with timelines and expectations for results
      2. You haven’t invested in yourself.  I spend tens of thousands (over the years, it’s been hundreds of thousands) of dollars on my own personal development to be at my best for my clients.  How much are you spending on you to sharpen who you are personally and professionally?
        1. Set dedicated funds aside to work with a solid coach!
    3. Your people!
      1. You haven't really acknowledged that the work they’re doing is meaningful and matters to you and the company.
        1. The same holds true for your family.  Focus, engage and let them know that they matter to you.

It’s really simple but funny enough, it’s not easy!

Dr P interviews Dr G, and they talk TRUTH and cutting through to what matters most.

Dr Gathers, host of The Truth Prescription, is an emergency medicine physician who came through childhood trauma and debilitating illness to help others determine what matters most.

    Gems from this interview:

    • All there is me
    • I have a choice
    • Choice leads to action
    • This matches Dr P’s book, Choosing Your Power where he talks about awareness leads to choice and choice leads to awareness.
    • Life lessons get more subtle
    • Patience is a life lesson
    • Dr G shared another common theme shared by Dr P: There’s a difference between knowing and understanding.  You can never really understand what someone else is going through; you might have empathy.  Sympathy is profoundly different.
    • Dr G’s next efforts will focus on his new short film production

We’ve come to a place where we’re not sure that what we’re doing matters.  Does it make a difference if you go into work, shower for the zoom call, or even greet a teammate since it’s remote?

We feel remote and that’s a problem.  We simply feel disconnected.

When we’re not connected with our work or the people who are affected by our work, nothing really matters.  As good humans, we want to know that our work is meaningful and that our contributions are valued.

The first person to give meaning to your work is YOU.  The next person is the leadership at your work.  And if you’re the leader, then call on your executive team - “does this even matter?”

And, be sure that they know that their work matters to you.

This goes for your family and friends as well: Hey, thank you. That conversation meant a lot. I really appreciate it.

Again, the concept is simple while the practice isn’t always easy.

Go make your meaning and be deliberate about uplifting someone today!

From civil engineer to Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach!

Jane reverse-engineered the health she wanted after crippling rheumatoid arthritis took her down.  She kept metrics and followed through on processes that she researched.  Though a critical thinker, she recognized the importance of mindset.

Pay attention to how the gut affects the brain!

Suggestions:  Slow it down; relax and enjoy your food.  Be grateful.

Use the Reticular Activating System to your advantage and visualize what you want, not what you don’t want (health is different from the absence of disease).

Leverage your Central Nervous System so that you’re not in fight/flight but in rest, relax, and rejuvenate.

We’re a little frenzied right now as our roles at home blend with who our roles at work if there is any work.  We feel like we’re falling behind and that we’re in a game of catch-up.

    What to do?

    • Recognize that you actually need distinct roles for work, home, and community
    • Get control of your schedule for different projects
      • Be sure to include YOU on that project list
    • Give yourself a little grace for what you can’t do because you’re doing a lot already
    • Don’t wait to start new habits.  The seeds of the habits you plant today will yield either results or consequences in a month or two down the road.

    • Show up in service to others - to your team, organization, family, and yourself!
    • Cut through to what matters most - there’s A LOT of noise out there.  Cut through the noise, get your information, and get off line before you’re inundated further.
    • We’re used to stress in stages and we can handle that.  We’re experiencing a stress marathon with messages changing all the time.  Recognize that we’ll go through the ups and downs of hope and fear.  Keep looking forward and point yourself in the direction of possibility

  • Interview with Bob Lee

One Sharp Sword - Cutting Through To What Matters Most with Dr Wayne Pernell is meant to be thought-provoking and inspiring.

This show offers no advice or counsel related to law, finance, or health (either physical or mental).  You are listening at your own discretion and interpreting what you hear in your own way.  This show is meant for entertainment purposes and no claims of enhancement or enrichment of any sort are indicated or implied.  Nope, this show doesn’t promise to make you better looking.  But hey… look at you now!  Listen in!  Enjoy!

Bob Lee is an author and international speaker.  He’s the CEO of TrustLabs, based in the UK.  On today’s show, we talk about leadership and management and the core teachings from his book, Trust Rules.

    • Investing in employees isn’t wasting money; in fact, treating people well is essential.
    • Perks and benefits don’t make the workplace great; Building Trust and genuine Relationships do.
    • As a leader, be habitually available.  Having an open door doesn’t always mean approachable.
    • Keep the small promises - “I’ll get back to you” means just that.
    • Everyone is a leader. (Not everyone is in a position to manage.)
    • Treating everyone equally is NOT treating everyone fairly.
    • Feedback has come to be such a negative word, but really it’s positive, negative, or focused on some improvement.
    • Having fun at work means that you’re relaxed and essentially the same person at home and at work.  Being relaxed equates with providing better service.
    • Control the controllables.  Let go of what you can’t.
    • Don’t judge people by their appearances.
      • Fun exercise during introductions: state who you are, where you’re from, and something surprising.
    • Trust becomes grown in the culture.
