  • New Habits
What you do now sets the tone for the future?
Look back a bit; what you set in motion not that long ago has become your reward, and style, of today.
Here Dr P calls on you to Look Ahead to the future and notes that the habits you need to lay down now need attention.  We’re in odd times, so here’s a quick check on your Food, Exercise, Sleep, Learning (books, online, etc), People - you can still connect with people and either ask FOR help or you can ask TO help.

  • It Is What It Is, Or Is It?
“It is what it is…” What does that phrase even mean?
That sounds like giving up. It seems like that saying is about choosing to just let go of ALL choices.
Instead, get to this one key question: What’s Available To Me NOW?
If x condition exists, then what? If not this thing, then what else is available.
You’ve got power. You’ve got choice, even in the midst of a pandemic and a community shut down, you still have choice in the way you respond and the resources you seek.
    Go!

  • Tony Ponturo Interview
A name most won’t know but a man whose work you will, he was the guy behind the Anheuser-Busch brand as the VP over Global Marketing. Now, a Broadway producer and NYU adjunct professor, Tony Ponturo brings his insights to us on Leadership and Life.
Tony embodies the #StartsWithOne spirit in that he engages in relationships and not transactions. In order to get things done, it’s about the engagement first. Being trustworthy, seeing and listening to the other person first.

  • Overcoming Fear and Uncertainty
In the absence of information, we make things up to fill in the gaps. What is our new normal? What is currently typical doesn’t have to be our new normal. There’s a difference.
Massive, ongoing fear should never feel normal.
It’s okay to say, I may not have all the answers, but I’m certain that we’ll get through it.
In the absence of certainty, it’s important to know what you CAN count on. You can count on your ability to get through this. You’ve done so up to now. You’ve got this

  • Breaking All The Glasses
If you were doing the dishes and you broke a glass, you wouldn’t decide that you’re so messed up in doing the dishes that you should just break ALLLLL of the glasses.  Nope. You’d clean up the mess and get done what needed to get done.
This is the same for your projects at work and your relationships. Don’t break everything because you slipped. That slip taught you something. Now, get back on track!

  • Overcoming Fear
What the world needs right now is you at your very best.
There is a lot to be fearful of.  Yet living in fear doesn’t serve you or the people around you.  Living in fear doesn’t make a virus go away. It doesn’t diminish terror.
The world needs you to show up at your best and your most positive and compassionate.
Step one:  Take care of yourself.
Then, ask someone close to you how you can help them.  Demonstrate compassion.
    Have faith in yourself.
    Ask how you can help.

  • How Choosing Defines You
During one of our after-dinner chats, my wife and I were discussing our work. The concept of power came up. We explored how people think that getting things, buying, showing off, being the influencer is what makes people feel powerful. That’s all backwards, of course. Having more doesn’t make you powerful. And certainly pretending to have more doesn’t make you powerful.
And my wife blurted out something profound:
It’s not the having, it’s the choosing that defines you.

  • Yes, And - The “Plus One” In Life

One Sharp Sword - Cutting Through To What Matters Most with Dr Wayne Pernell is meant to be thought-provoking and inspiring.

This show offers no advice or counsel related to law, finance, or health (either physical or mental).  You are listening at your own discretion and interpreting what you hear in your own way. This show is meant for entertainment purposes and no claims of enhancement or enrichment of any sort are indicated or implied.  Nope, this show doesn’t promise to make you better looking. But hey… look at you now! Listen in! Enjoy!

You get a whole lot more out of life when you stop struggling against and choose to build on.  That could be a concept or it could be something that someone just said to you.

We’re so competitive in conversations, we can’t wait to break in with “yeah, but….”  Doing so only serves to create an unwinnable debate.

    • Live in Yes, And…
    • Build on the thing the other person just said
    • Build on what you were just given
    • And if you’re feeling resistant, see what happens if you step into “Yes, and…”
    • See more on this specifically at www.WaynePernell.com/blog

Thank you for listening to One Sharp Sword!

  • Caring Detachment or Apathetic Clarity
We good humans like to give of ourselves. Sometimes, people over-give and over-manage an outcome that really isn’t theirs to manage.
Separate the person from the behavior.
Determine if the consequence of their behavior (something the did or said) is yours to clean up.
Stop thinking about the “what if” stuff. You are thinking about it more than they are.
Be compassionate and then let go. Stay a good caring human. Let go of what behavior the other will exhibit.
    Love.
