Hardship can make life feel chaotic and thankfulness easy to forget. Psalm 107 gathers stories of wanderers, prisoners, sick people and sailors who cry to God and receive His help. Their rescue shows that hardship is not pointless chaos, but remains under God's loving hand and turns His people towards Him. The wise response is intentional gratitude. God's redeemed people should tell how He has answered prayer, consider His loyal love, and praise Him together rather than crediting luck or their own ability.

God’s covenant promise places believers’ children within His church, not outside it while they wait to become adults. Baptism marks entry into this community, while the Lord’s Supper renews and proclaims God’s saving promise through Jesus. Yet baptism and believing parents do not automatically save a child. Children must personally trust Jesus, and those who can express age-appropriate faith may join the guarded family meal after speaking with their parents and elders.

A boat can drift far while everyone sleeps, and faith can also move quietly from the gospel when attention slips. The danger is not harmless. Neglecting the salvation announced by Jesus ends in God’s judgement. The message is no uncertain report, because Jesus both announced and accomplished the salvation it offers. Paying closest attention means making Scripture, worship with the church, and honest engagement with difficult questions regular habits.

Prayer can falter when pain is too deep for words. Yet the Holy Spirit lives in those who trust Christ, giving them new desires and power to please God and pray. He assures them that they are God's children, so they can groan with hope and cry to their Father. The Spirit carries even weak words and hidden longings to God, interceding in perfect agreement with the Father's will. Through this quiet work, God hears prayer and uses it to shape His children into the likeness of His Son.

Sin broke humanity's relationship with God, leaving people unable to draw near by themselves. Jesus brings His people back to the Father. Prayer need not be a plea before a distant judge. Jesus brings those who trust Him into God’s family, and the Spirit assures them that they are adopted children who may call God Father. The Father gives every good gift. He also uses hardship as loving discipline, never as punishment for a Christian’s sin, because Christ bore that punishment on the cross. He is willing and able to answer, so His children can approach Him with grateful, trusting prayer.

Sin leaves people guilty before God and cut off from Him. Yet God binds Himself to His people, promising to be their God and make them His people. Israel broke that relationship, but Jesus obeyed where His people failed and bore the penalty for their broken faith. Because He now intercedes for His people, they can appeal to God’s faithfulness, submit their requests to His kingdom purposes, and pray with confidence.

Prayer does not begin with people forcing their way into God's presence. God first makes Himself known through His works, His name, and His presence, so prayer answers His initiative. The Tower of Babel shows people trying to seize access, while Jacob's stairway begins with God opening the way. In Jesus, God comes near in human flesh and shows His compassionate heart. Those who trust Him may address their Father, confident that He willingly hears His children.

Christians often feel the gap between who they want to be and the sin still pulling at their hearts. Galatians 5 names this conflict between the sinful nature and the Holy Spirit, who directs believers towards loving service. His fruit grows gradually and inevitably from living roots, with love, joy, peace and every other quality growing together. Those who belong to Jesus have crucified the sinful nature. They keep in step with the Spirit by remembering Christ, putting sinful desires to death, and finding deeper satisfaction in His grace.

Israel faced exile after wilfully rejecting God, yet God told Isaiah to speak comfort to His people's hearts. Their deepest hope was not restored land or former prosperity, but pardon and peace with God. John the Baptist later prepared the way for Jesus, in whom God came to fetch His people and deal with their sin. God's promise still stands, and His church holds out that hope so others may find comfort in Christ.
